  • Laws of Thermodynamics

I was wondering if anyone could help me resolve a philosophical aspect of a scientific law.

The law I'm referring to is the 1st law of thermodynamics. If mass and energy can neither be created nor destroyed, how did the universe and everything in it appear in the first place?

I'm sure there's probably some simple explanation that they teach you in physics class, but I was too busy getting high to take it.

    Thanks.

when i was taught thermodynamics in first year university, the prof started by saying that they are laws for systems of a certain size. so that, if the system you're talking about is too big or too small, it may not comply with all of these laws.

thermodynamics was created for steam engines, before applying the laws to anything else, the question, "do these laws apply here" must be answered.

        check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermodynamics

at the end they list black hole thermodynamics, which basically adds on a few different rules for thermodynamics to apply. these rules are theoretical, since black holes are still a mystery.

about big bang, it also is a mystery, and will always be. the theory is that the dimensions came into existence at that point, and so you can't say anything about if something existed or not before the big bang because there is no "before the big bang". if you've got the hang of that strange logic, then here's the argument on what you're talking about:

The mass and energy was not created, it did not appear. it was in existence as soon as existence was possible.

i hope that answers your question. it should be noted that i neither agree or disagree with this stuff, it's theoretical, i personlly think it's kind of funny.

Recently this was on the news with an answer to the age old question of which came first.

Now a team made up of a geneticist, philosopher and chicken farmer claim to have found an answer. It was the egg.

              CNN has the story HERE

there is no reason why the universe and everything in it needed to "appear" in the first place.

Einstein proved that energy can be created through nuclear fission, so perhaps that had something to do with it.

You cannot "create" energy. You can only convert it, and mass is a form of energy that can be converted into other forms.

This would make sense if not for the fact that we're actually here.

Listen, I know that Introduction to Physics shit, but with nuclear fission, the energy is basically created.

With all the energy from one atom released, and those controlled reactions are able to produce more reactions, it is the same as making energy. The amount of Free Energy, or energy that profitted over the amount of energy needed to make the energy, is so great that it is seemingly endless.

EXCEPT WE ARE NOT HERE! WE ARE IN TEH MATRICKS!!!

DTF, a chain reaction and "creating energy" are completely different. You're still not creating it because, in your own words, it is being released from the atoms.
