wadi i totally disagree with you on the drilling for oil off of florida. THat will be inevitable. The search for offshore oil grows b the month as technology gets better all the time. THe oil companines are moving deeper and deeper. THey got some bad ass huge drilling ships in producion in North Europe somewhere i beleive. H2 cars are going to have a very hard time in penetrating the market here, whether developed or not. I havent heard one thing about their success here in the States.

Personally, i could care less about bombing Iraq. economically its a good move. Nothing stimulates an economy like a well run war. The government will be pooring money in to manufacturers all over to produce weapons and materials.

lastly, on the behavior of the dems at the SotU address. The opposing party always does stuff like that. Its the way the game is played. When LCinton was pres the repubs would howl and boo and stuff in response to clintons idiotic ideas.

after lastly, carter didnt do shit as a president, was a very inept man at getting anyhting done. Regean did a good job, ultimately his econimic theory stank but he appeared as a good leader. Bush Sr. the same. Clinton i always have disliked. Bush jr has done well. i thikn the roosevelts were good presidents even with their shady deals they pulled.

      edit

It would have been a lot more interesting to have watched Hillary Clinton's expressions throughout the speech.... rather than the president looking bored.... really though, if I was American I would be questioning anyone who voted Republican... Not that Al Gore was a fantastic candidate mind you but at least he'd be focusing Americans on their economy..........

When reading this I can't feel anything but sadness. That comment has to be one of the most inhumane, cold hearted and lack-of-empathy-posts I've ever seen.

I don't know the total budget for USA's aid, but 5 billions USD?!
Sheesh, Sweden a much smaller country with 1/33 of the population of USA provide 2 billion USD as aid for poorer and less developed countries in the world every year.

Discussing American economics with foreigners is about as useful as telling Muslims that Allah is a homosexual.

edit: I don't think that Allah is actually a homosexual.

You're wrong. Bombing Iraq is not a good move economically. PV you are in college, do you take any economics classes? This war would be a small scale war lasting anywhere between 60-200 days, or at least that is what they are predicting. Wars like that don't help the economy at all. Vietnam didn't help the economy. Only World War 2 helped the economy because it followed the great depression and created jobs for the thousands of unemployed and they reinvested the money back into the economy. The soldiers we are sending to Iraq already have jobs, and won't be making any extra money to reinvest into the system. Thus, not boosting the economy. And if you think well we are making bombs and ammunition and stuff, that should help stimulate the economy. No, it shouldn't, because we aren't going to have a total war. A huge portion of our factories in WW2 were used to make products to support the war effort. With a war that is going to be no where near as large scale as WW2, the number of factories used to make weaponry and the like will stay pretty much the same. Unless something drastic happens that no one expects, this will hurt, rather than help our economy.

As for the State of the Union antics...

When Clinton was in office, for the majority of his first term, both sides tended to stand more on average than they have for Bush. I was reading this dinky little article about it. Face it, Bush sucks, and the politically educated know that. Those who are chem majors generally don't.

war isn't good for the economy, it's good for the defense industry (bush's friends). and if, as andy rooney said, we end up going to total war, our standard of living will take a hit as we will have to make sacrificies for the 'war effort'. all that, plus the loss of american lives and iraqi lives for what? for a bunch of white geezers and their good ol' war profiteering game? you'd have to be a complete dolt to think saddam hussein poses any threat to the united states, and you'd have to be devoid of integrity to believe that we should just attack anyway - fuck, what kind of reasoning (or lack thereof) is that?
                  'vet' is the new 'newb'.

Total foreign aid budget for the U.S. is around 15.8 billion dollars for economic and educational assistance.

Total foreign aid budget for Sweden 1.7 billion dollars.

U.S donates less than one percent of its GNP to foreign aid (about 0.2%). Sweden donates less than one percent as well (about 0.7%).

Those stats don't exactly paint a pretty picture of American governmental aid, but they're certainly a lot more accurate and favorable than the stats you took out of context above. If you want to make Americans look like shitheads, though, there are better ways of doing it than by attacking the total amount of our foreign aid. For example, you could bitch that our government gives more money to the nation of Israel every year than we give to the entire continet of Africa. That's seems like a pretty valid complaint, if you'd like to adopt it.

And to address the whole topic of foreign sermonizing: yeah, we're bastards. Sorry about that. We're working on that here on the homefront. While we're working on not being arrogant and greedy little fucks, though, do some of you guys mind working on the self-righteousness? I'm always open to a discussion, but when you start preaching at a nation, you're probably stepping over the line (unless your respective nation is Luxembourg, in which case: fuck it). Feel free to point out all of our problems -- that will only help us figure out how to get on the right track -- but don't do it with that "we don't have any problems of our own, cause we're progressive, socially-conscious Eurpeans and consequently dissapointed in you" voice. If you come at us with that tone, we're just going to shutdown, stop listening, and hold up our "clean up your own backyard before you come play in ours" signs.

You Americans don't have the slightest knowledge about the REAL world

                      Hi,

first I'd like to say that I haven't seen the State of the Union, but only TV fragments. Ok, so I've learned from this thread that the speaker is Bush, apparently the President of the Union States.
Over here in the good old Netherlands we have a queen doing that shit, I mean speeches. What the hell is wrong with you Americans, doesn't your president have something better to do than going around the country and doing speeches?
Where's your royalty? Or are you Americans so incredible stupid to not have a royalty of any kind? I just can't believe this.

And where the hell was that speech? In the convention hall of the mentally challenged? Well the public surely weren't politicians. I invite you stupid Americans to come over here and find out what REAL politicians look like.

But I fully support the bombing of Iraq. But instead of bombs, bomb them with presents and candy! Think of it like this: the poor and oppressed people in Iraq will get a taste of the welfare of the West, and they will start a revolution against Iraq. Then they will set up a democratic government and give the world free oil!

Stupid Americans, Holland should be the strongest power of the world, since you're obviously too retarded to do anything right.

Yeah, hi--I would like to point out that the key word in that sentence is "should." The last time Holland was a major world power was over 200 years ago. They had a republican form of government, right? And their trade industry boomed? So what happened? You guys got a Queen? Nice move.

First of all, you shouldn't talk so lighthearted about the Queen. The Queen is someone you should respect and worship. No, she is not a god, but neither is she a human. She is kind of like the Pope, but then better. If my greatest wish ever will be fulfilled and get to see the Queen, I would die out of sheer happiness.

Why not? All they do is sit around their windmills, smoking pot and carving those wooden shoes, daydreaming about tulips all day anyways.
