In more secular countries like Canada we've seen more children being born out of wedlock and such. I don't think without religion people are immoral monsters who find nothing wrong with killing, stealing ect... My parents (one Catholic and one Protestant) decided not to indoctrinated me and my brothers into any form of religion or faith as children, though one wanted Catholic schooling. They believed that choosing your religion was an important choice and that teaching a person right and wrong didn't factor into a religious or spiritual education.
Statistically those who have a strong religiosity or ties to families values are shown to maintain less stable environments for their family unit. So no I don't think religion corresponds in anyway to producing more moral or well adjusted people.
"Atheism" is actually lack of belief in the supernatural. I guess you could call me an atheist, since I do not follow any religion and the magical tea pot in orbit is still using a cloaking device (even though society tends to view it in a bad light). Atheist does not box people into ideologies or world views such as Christianity or other faiths so to your comment about "free thinkers", you I guess as a religious person you are free to think within the bounds that God exist, you can not question his existence, he loves you, he created you and will save you existential ass when the time comes (if you believe, note the word belief). When was the last time you've seen a channel devoted to Atheism or an entirely different religion? We have 2 Christian channels up here on basic cable.
