They recently released a 16gb model, and with the way SD cards are increasing in size (it's up to 32gb at the moment), you shouldn't have a problem with memory (unless you put your entire library on your player, which I still don't understand why people do this, convenience I suppose)

Nockm is correct on sony. They are pretty good sounding players and was my 2nd choice in an mp3 player. They also took away their weird atrac3 file format and there horrible media player. People at head-fi seem to like the newest model (the one with bluetooth).
Also, you mentioned rockbox. the D2 is one of the players that is currently being attempted to be rockboxed. There is no finished firmwire for it, but I think they have unfinished versions for you to test and what-not.
