My iAudio X5 broke today, and i'm really upset because it was a fantastic piece of kit.

i am most definitely looking to get a new player, and as they have stopped producing the iAudio X5 (much to my disappointment) i am not sure what to get

i've been looking at an ipod -- they seem like the only mp3 players that are worth buying at the moment (or am i wrong?)

the ipod classic 80GB is only around £140 but then i also saw the ipod touch 32GB and am undecided whether it is worth splashing out on that.

any ideas?

How much memory are you looking for?

I recently got the Cowon D2, and so far it is pretty good. touch screen, expandable memory, customizable screen, bigger most in music file support, and it's pretty tiny.
They recently released a 16gb model, and with the way SD cards are increasing in size (it's up to 32gb at the moment), you shouldn't have a problem with memory (unless you put your entire library on your player, which I still don't understand why people do this, convenience I suppose)

Nockm is correct on sony. They are pretty good sounding players and was my 2nd choice in an mp3 player. They also took away their weird atrac3 file format and there horrible media player. People at head-fi seem to like the newest model (the one with bluetooth).

Also, you mentioned rockbox. the D2 is one of the players that is currently being attempted to be rockboxed. There is no finished firmwire for it, but I think they have unfinished versions for you to test and what-not.

Cons: I have yet to get non-purchased videos to play sound. Sychronizing can be a pain in the ass. Can't songs, but can transfer files (double up to solve problem). No queing feature (don't know that any have this).

what about the "on the go" playlist or party shuffle?

who syncs their ipod? jeez, i love my 80gb classic, and if you wanna copy from player to computer just select "show hidden icons" and copy them bitches over. your really dumb

Great battery life, sound and doesn't need any software to get music on it, just drag 'n drop.

I agree. Took a while before Sony got it, but the horrible format is gone now. Excellent player!

and da1 I use my phone as an mp3 player as well... I have a 2gb micro sd card, so I just throw some mp3's and television shows on there with my usb data transfer cable... good times

Converting videos for the ipod is time consuming. I'd get a 30 gig creative zen, which makes getting your audio and video onto your player ridiculously easy. I also find the audio to be a bit better than the ipod.

i didn't know you could do this. can you make a playlist from the ipod itself, without itunes? I know you can do this with the Zune, which is one of it's better features. I was kinda thinking along the lines of the queuing in Winamp, where you can pick certain songs out of a playlist and set them up in a shorter queue. Damn i wish i could just use winamp everywhere i go.

this might actually save them. their atrac3 format was fucking horrible, i still have cd's full of atrac3 files that played on an old atrac3 cd player..

Totally forgot to mention this. I'm not sure if it's sharper, but it's a lot bigger and plays a lot more files without the no-sound problem of the ipod.

Burz how are the ety's? I've always wanted them but can't justify buying them. Is the bass as lacking as they say? How bad are the microphonics?

While looking at a list of songs, highlight one and hold the center button down for a few seconds until it flashes. The song is now put into the "on the go" playlist. This is done through the ipod and not itunes.

Which ones? I can't really say anything about the Etys, since I have hardly anything to compare them to, though they are worlds apart from anything I had before. The microphonics are frustrating in the beginning, then you both get used to it and figure out ways of minimizing them. The bass is there if you make use of the EQ, which is not really the purist way, but what can you do.. though certain music styles that are less "full" than rock, metal and so on, allow the driver enough breathing room to produce sufficient thump. But I expect a definitive improvement with the triple.fi 10 that arrive in the mail next week, then we can have a chat ^^ Plus a surprise! ha ha I'm giggling like a schoolgirl just thinking of what I ordered..
