  • Bible the word of god?

there are plenty off people who take the bible as the literal word of god. I've been reading up a bit about creationists and was shocked at how much more widespread it was than i thought. I had it in my head it was only the fringes of religious extremists but it's pretty mainstream over in america and has significant pull in alot of european countries too.

So i was browsing the news and came across this

it's not exactly new evidence and i've been saying that for years without citing that codex but for those who believe that the bible is the literal word of god, how do they explain it?

I don't believe that the bible is the literal word of God, but I've been studying the ecological evolutionary theory by Mr. Lenski who says the realization of religion can be explained through this theory and it basically goes like this:

Through a sudden rise in innovation caused by ecological factors such as historical climate change, people gradually moved on from the hunting- and gathering era they've been stuck in for so long and formed larger and more complex societies. Societies in the hunting- and gathering era were particularly small (roughly 30 people compared with today's millions) so there was no true need for a system which regulates a society in such a manner that it keeps the society bonded together. If you can speak of any "religion" in the hunting- and gathering era, it was therefore animistic rather than theistic. These reasons were also why these societies were extremely egalitarian compared by our medieval or even modern ones.

As societies grew larger and more complex though, there was a need for a bigger encompassing system and religion perfectly fulfills the need for everyone to know their place and role in society. Naturally, different societies formed different views of life and its origins from which they evolved in historical and today's religions.

So that's basically how religion came about from a social scientific perspective.

When was the last time evidence ever changed the mind of a strict religious person anyway? They know their bible is true so who cares if some random old book pretending to be a bible is slightly different.

If the fact that there are many different non-corroborative scriptures which date back to the time of Christ is the sole reason that you doubt that the bible is the inerrant word of God, then you're a fool. How about the Biblical claims about the origins of the universe, which have been found to be completely inaccurate (with the help of carbon dating and Einsteinian physics.) How about the completely absurd 'creation' story of Adam and Eve which has been shadowed in every respect by the elegance and simplicity of Darwins 'Theory' of Evolution? (I use 'Theory' loosely, as it is an undeniable fact.)

I'll tell you what, give me ONE (just one) piece of objective, falsifiable evidence that points to this medieval doctrine being written by that celestial inhabitant that supposedly created the universe. A supremely moral being, according to this ethically insightful work of fiction, that rates adultery, the worshipping of idols and jealously a worse sin than rape or child abuse.

        Fuck off.

Edit: To the degree that you believe in the Bible is exactly the degree to which you are ignorant and morally flawed.

Stayon> That type of thing, when you're married for 50 years but you know you fucked up when you dropped chilli sause on your elitist rich boss, while crossing the cafeteria's lunch zone, getting you fired, because you were distracted admiring the cleaning lady's ass that you beated off to, when your sluggish wife and two retarted kids were asleep.

On topic, anyone ever read "The God Delusion" by richard dawkins? He makes some interesting points regarding some questionable parts of religion.

Ya, what Gen said actually made me thing of my Intro to Religion class last semester. The first 3/4 of the semester was speant defining terms with the last 1/4 a case study. This went as far as to define words like "space" and "god" and "good" and "truth." To type out all that shit would take weeks (see: Critical Terms for Religious Studies)

Fact of the matter is: if you think it's the word of God, surprise surprise, it is.

Edit: You have to be able to get at least one person to think it's the word of God too.

Yeah but the one thing you are all missing. If you follow how god says to live your life in the Bible, if nothing else you live your life as a good person, who does the right thing, has morals and beliefs. You go to a place where once a week you see a lot of the same people, where you can meet plenty of friends, and in one of my friends cases a wife, who shares similar ideals to you and you also know is a good person through religion. Despite all this, when you die you are covered if god is real, and if not at least people will respect your life, and know you were a good person. It is better than the alternative.

Meh, you can't deny the similarities whether you believe in god or don't. Would you rather me put down "Barack Obama will destroy America with his communistic and socialist agenda" - Either way liberal douches would try to flame me for it.

K, so i'm not the most god bearing person in the world, but i've been to church and i've never felt like anyone was pressuring me to do anything, i've listened amd i've talked to ministers. The one thing that they all have in common is faith. Regardless of how true the bible is, like was said earlier, it's paths teach you how to treat another human being.

Bashing people for being religious, is pretty low brow. Make fun of people for being idiotic, but to attack one's faith. come on.
