  • ITT Sarien "finishes" his AK-47 Build

    Howdy.
Just in case it should be of interest to anyone, I recently performed the final assembly, test firing, and then first run of ammo through my own Romanian AK-47.

Here's the AK Parts kit as I bought it:

Here she is assembled and on my kitchen table:

And if you want a large image:
    Large Ass Picture

I stripped off the finish on the rear stock, and will be sanding it smooth, and then using Tung Oil on it to refinish it. Then I'll do the front handguard set. Also I changed out the handgrip to a polish handgrip because they aren't as narrow and feel more comfortable in the hand.

Also in that second picture is an AK Bayonet, 2 30rd magazines and 1 10rd.

All in all it was pretty damned fun, and was amazing when I did that first test fire, and it fired a round for the first time since who knows when. I have pictures somewhere of bending the receiver, and welding the rails, as well as starting a protective metal finish on the receiver.

That's pretty damn awesome. Where did you buy the parts? Does it jam up much still (I assume it did back when the Ruskies were using it) or did you somehow fix that?

I got that particular kit off a guy that was on AKFiles.com. There are still a fair amount of AK Parts kits available but prices are going up, because people fear that the Assault Weapons Ban will be coming back into place (let's hope that stupid bad horrible law never shows up again). For instance, I paid $160 for that kit when I got it, that same kit would probably run you $300 today, but I have seen several that are in the $225-250 range.

It's also funny that you mention the jamming. The AK is notoriously reliable, it's really super hard to get them to not feed. However, mine did so, that 10 round crap chinese mag wouldn't even feed in it at all. So I took the bolt carrier out and was looking at things when it kinda hit me. This thing had been pulled apart and kept as a parts kit. The feed ramp was ugly as hell, exposed to the elements and had buildup covering it. So I took one of my Dremels and polished all the feed ramp and instantly even the chinese mag fed just fine.

During the feed test after that, I fired 15 rounds, as fast as I could, and it ran just fine.

The M-16 isn't really "bad" at jamming really. It's just a more strict rifle. The tolerances with that rifle are very small. Everything is virtually standardized and the design is genius, really. The problem that mainly causes jamming is that the spent gas that forces an M-16 to cycle actually makes it into the action itself, which leads to gumming it up. If certain powders are used in the ammo, it gets very bad, very quickly. To run an M-16 you have to keep it clean. HAVE to.

If you look at that picture of the parts kit, the piece directly under the barrel with the shiny piston on the end, is the bolt carrier and gas piston. In the AK, the spent gas comes up through the gas tube (the tube above the barrel) and pushes that piston to the rear, which pushes the bolt carrier back, unlocking the breech, ejecting the round, cocking the hammer, then the mainspring pushes the bolt carrier back forward, chambering another round from the mag, then locking the breech.

Rats I was thinking AK-74 for some reason because I've had problems with jamming while shooting my friend's. I'm pretty sure it wasn't due to maintenance either because the guy keeps his shit clean as any good ex-Marine should. I'm admittedly no expert on either gun and I've only shot the AK-74 once.

I still prefer the M16 by far. AK47 is a cheap gun. Its like having a choice between a Eugo or a Hummer really

I think you mean Yugo, and picking a Hummer over a Yugo doesn't necessarily make you a better consumer, it just means you picked the less shitty of two shitty products.
Either way, an AK47 will kill you. So thus it is a good gun. I doubt either of you are going to need to defend yourself from multiple armed assassins any time soon, so take what you got and leave me scared shitless that people actually own these things.

Yeah I misspelled, thanks for the fix.

And as far as they go, I have shot both in military training gun quals, although the AK47 was just for fun. The m16 has always felt like a much better gun to me, despite the obvious that they can both kill you. The problems that most people have with AK47s (which most people owning and using them are terrorist/guerilla/3rd world country types) are that they do not have good accuracy, and frankly you cannot aim them as well. Plus, a fully auto gun is impossible to aim unless you burst fire, which most amateur gunners (aka 8 year old kids in somalia) don't do. This is true with both of them. It also wastes a hell of a lot of ammo for no reason, when one bullet will usually do the trick on the intended target.

For instance, the first m16 was the type A in the vietnam era. They were fully automatic guns. The military reportedly wasted thousands upon thousands of bullets for each reported kill, which was obviously a waste. The Type B was a later period, which I would assume is around the early/mid 90's (I don't know for sure don't quote me on that) where it was purely burst fire or single shot, switchable. The current model is the Type C which has 3 selections: Single shot, burst fire, and fully automatic. Its safe to say that burst fire is the far superior method for any of you who have actually tried aiming fully auto (makes it easier when prone though).

Basically, it is just personal preference, but I would much rather take an m16 into a gunfight then an AK47. It is a very stable gun though, and rarely does jam. You can get sand and all kinds of crap in it and it will not jam. It is also very cheap. This is probably the leading reason why it is so popular in the world.

Anyway, my dad actually owns an m16 too. You definitely don't want to get shot by one of those. The bullets actually rotate top to bottem instead of in a clockwise spin motion (kinda like shooting a basketball), so if it hits you in the lower intestines the bullet will rotate up and destroy your insides, and come out the upper portion of your back. Nasty nasty weapon.

I am so liberal that I'm shocked - LITERALLY SHOCKED - that people would own guns. I mean fuck, I thought guns were invented so nobody could have them except African children, terrorists, and the government.

the constitution was a beautiful thing, that is until we destroyed it

worst part about it is its not even the liberals... the patriot act did plenty enough to achieve that goal
