While its great to be able to say 'I told you so' I also am a true American so I am gravely disappointed by the direction it would appear our great nation is headed in. Obama in my mind had everything working for him at election time in that he was the right color and the right party to get elected, and he said what people wanted to hear. Not much of it was practical, but people wanted to hear optimism, that we would be fine given his leadership. He had an answer for everything and people wanted to believe it no matter how dumb it was. Not all of these problems are his and I dont blame any president as I believe our whole culture needs to restructure, but I'm the most upset about him (and bush for that matter) throwing money at things that werent going to get fixed anyway. GM, chrysler...what did that really accomplish bailing them out? If they put out quality products like ford they wouldnt be in their situation, but helping them sustain themselves for a few more months didnt even allow them to produce new cars that were actually good, except the new camaro. I think everyone knew that, too. The inflation we're about to have makes me happy i have a govt job because the dollar will not retain its purchasing power for long. Like everyone else I hope the best but personally I dont see it working out well

I already told everyone that temperatures aren't rising because of global warming, in fact temperatures aren't rising at all. But if you want to insist that it is getting hotter every year (which when you look at average temperatures from the last hundred years or so they aren't) you can just blame the fact that the earth goes through cycles of warming and cooling, and since you science buffs want to go research global warming and trust that ignorant theory, you can go read up on things like "the ice age" and other ages of heat and cold on earth that further to prove my point that are considered true science. I would have to say I am a large fan of what Obama is preaching when you hear him speak or when you hear the ideology and the intended effects of his policies, however what he is lacking is in the realm of execution. Why is that? Because he honestly has very little political power. Congress simply will not support a lot of Obama's ideological stances simply because it take a shot at their wallets. The SI groups and lobbyists who fund them and load them with money will go away. And lets face it, people are self-interested bastards, they don't want the bank account getting trimmed down in any way shape or form.

What I really like about this health care system idea that Obama is preaching is the preventative health care part. If you hear the idea behind it, it is meant to set standards and stop problems before they occur. Let's face it, if a private company could produce a cure for an illness or a temporary 3 month stopgap measure, which would be produced? The stopgap measure because they can charge for it every 3 months and make gobs of profit. The goal is to either fund that cure or prevent the condition from ever occurring in the first place. So the intent is to stop this gouging technique, and provide preventative health care. Execution effective?......not so far and probably won't ever be unless the capitalists in America have a paradigm shift of opinion. What Obama is touting is ideologically sound, but his execution is poor as of now. Barring I think that after 6 months it is pointless to judge him. I mean I think the fact that he is an African American president and hasn't been shot at or killed in 6 months is a success in and of itself.

To comment on kthx's tirade against government spending leading to government debt: the democrats are attempting what was successful for them in the late 30s and 40s when FDR dragged the nation out of the Great Depression (or so they say). It is a similar philosophy, with probably much poorer execution and in a modern and very much changed world, but that is what they are trying. To criticize them for this is very retarded in my opinion. I mean the Republicans and Libertarians (Ron Paul) that you so avidly support buy into Adam Smith and Keynesian economics, shit that is just as old and outdated. I applaud Obama for doing what he is doing and I still think he was by far the best option. At least he is attempting to pave a new path in an ever changing world, not fit an old broken system to a modern world that has grown 4 sizes larger. I was late on my payment this month. Was due on the 5th (Sunday) and a holiday weekend...banks had been closed on Fri. I didn't think that after being a CC holder w/ BOA for so many years and never being late once that they would have forgiven me and just dumped a late payment...nope...went from 9% to 23.9%. Am glad I only owed $200 and paid it off...needless to say, this card has been cancelled!

In short, what is the value of a pragmatic politician? A pragmatic politician seems only to never satisfy the other party or his own party. Being middle-of-the-road, all around good guy grows old on politicians in this country because it doesn’t sell newspapers or news channel commercials. Who is at fault for this? It is simply a mirror of our society, the problem is us, all of us. It IS a huge problem in society that we cannot appreciate the middle of the road guy who just picks the best possible choice by thinking things out really well and doing what's possible. Those politicians really don't stand out much, but then again, I may argue that people do appreciate such people when they do appear in certain cases even if it doesn't stand out.

Our provincial premier in Ontario (our equivalent of governor but with far more power... the premier is the leader of the majority party in the provincial parliament and as such basically runs the province during a majority government with virtually no need to listen to the opposition), Dalton McGuinty is probably the most boring guy you can think of to be our province's leader. He's boring to watch on TV, boring to read about, and doesn't ever do or say anything controversial and is very middle of the road (at least for Ontario). He's taken a ton of very unpopular positions but which if you think about it, had to be done (i.e. raising taxes by quite a lot after campaigning not to because we were $5.6 billion in deficit, or creating a greenbelt around Toronto to stop sprawl much to the complaints of developers and farmers looking to cash out, or pushing back promise to close our coal power plants because we can't ramp up nuclear fast enough).

People rewarded him with an even bigger majority in the last elections regardless.

I think if Obama really does do the 'right things' which make sense to most people as good things for society, then people will see that even if it's not controversial or headline grabbing. The problem is, I don't think Obama has the power to do all he wants due to the nature of the US political system (in Canada the Prime Minister in a majority government is far, far, far more powerful than the president in terms of political power in the country) and due to his own nature of trying to please everyone too hard.

I agree with most of what you wrote but would also add this. All politicians are 'old, rich, white guys', both Republicans and Democrats. This is why I eschew the Democratic party, at least the Republicans admit they are crusty old white guys. (For those might miss my point, I am not talking about skin color or gender, I am talking about living a certain lifestyle.) For me, nothing comes off more insincere than some politician talking about ‘a chicken in every pot’ and then getting in his limo and driving away. This is no better (and maybe worse) than a guy standing up and saying 'screw those poor people, I want to make myself richer.' Perhaps what is needed is a politician who would say, 'I am a part of the problem'.

Reminds me of how people found the old campaign video of Tom Daschle of him bragging about driving his own car to work
