I think more of the people with horror stories need to speak up. Actually I think Obama needs to address the issue more head on. All the polls say that the majority of Americans would support a public healthcare system, so why is it so hard to actually get it done?

The special interests and alarmists like kthx/izor are too loud and are drowning out everyone else.

Obama is doing a bad job of this, because as president and as someone who campaigned on healthcare reform as one of this signature issues, he needs to be the leader of this and not just let congress do whatever it wants as he's been mostly doing.

I think the problem is that health care in Britain is different than Canada, and both will differ from health care in the States. I just hope people understand that countries who have had this service for twenty-thirty plus years will have a much better understanding how to effectively run it. I don't see a grand solution, I see a long road towards a better future for the masses.

Well Obama is actually purposefully taking a tactic of letting congress do whatever it wants. He's going out of his way to please congress by letting them write the bill. This is directly because of the failure of the Clinton healthcare plan back in the 90s where Hilary basically did all the work and said to everyone 'hey vote for this'. But because Obama is bending over backwards for congress, and congress is so big that special interests have much leeway, whatever plan that gets passed in the end will certainly not be that great and probably end up costing a lot more money.

You have to understand that connotations of words change over time and based on the societal context of a word its meaning can transform. However, the words "conservative" and "liberal" in the modern American society have come to represent an idea far larger than the original ideology of liberalism and conservatism. To be rather succinct and brief, they represent a system of moral beliefs which you apply to your political views. So when I sit here and call wark a raging conservative I am referring to the context of modern American society and its connotations of the word, not your dictionary definition.
