I swear, it's like talking to a brick wall with you gall.Originally posted by Galleleo View PostRofl para, why do you insist on making yourself look so damn stupid?
And how does "having lectured to tens (?!?!?! Tens?!?!?!) of people" any proof of your self-proclaimed expert opinion on this matter? I can lecture to hundreds of people about whatever you like and I can lie the entire way. Until you have published tons of papers on the subject and are generally considered an authority on the subject by the academic world, stfu and stop being an ignorant idiot.
Me letting other's know what's up in the islamic world definitely prove's something. I couldn't be lecturing if I didn't know jack shit.
No fucking shit you lecture and lie. But you will get called out by the few who knew a bit. I read books, I deduce my own opinions, I lecture my opinions and ideas in that style for those interested. All interested in the topics i will be discussing, and want to learn a few things are invited. I said tens because i haven't fucking lectured hundreds, (again i feel like you're not understanding this).
Any questions.

Because he probably doesnt need suppressive fire, all he needs is peace so he can go home. He does not know anything about war if he has to worry about suppressive fire.Originally posted by Squeezer View PostThis is a good summary of what I've been arguing, I hope you don't mind me using it jerome. What the fuck does Chomsky have to do with anything when what you really need is some dude to give you suppressive fire?
Your approach is wrong, Einstein was no photon on lightspeed either when he discovered relativity.

Are you serious?!?! Of course any soldier knows more about military strategy who's been there and done that. They're exposed to it as part of their life. The army has an 'infantry first mos second' approach to things so you go take your average person that can talk like he knows anything about strategy while I hang out with them.Originally posted by Kolar View PostI don't think anyone is arguing against that. I also agree that using scorched-earth tactics in pre-modern warfare was effective, if not the only way to win a war. But your original point was that any soldier knows more about military strategy or foreign policy simply because of their personal experiences on the battlefield which I believe is wrong.
The problem with using such tactics today besides the issue of human rights is that we're fighting people who already impose a brutal way of life on the people in this region and we're also fighting a different kind of war that requires different strategies and ideas.
The only semi-right point is in foreign policy, but people who have the experience overseas have the ability to be in contact with the locals and naturally have the upper-hand when it comes to dealing with them. That doesnt mean they have the intelligence to use what theyve learned, but they've been exposed to it. I dont think you understand how far experience goes in the world but I'm sure when you get out into the working world if and when you get your college degree you'll see that you still have to work your way up because you dont know shit. The 'I read about it in a book' routine gets old pretty fast

I agree with kolar, above: I live across the river from Barksdale AFB, which is a major base for B-52's and A-10 warthogs; both extensively used in Iraq.
Alot of the people I talk to who are part of the services, seem to be very open about their lack of "experience" or knowledge of the overall politics of war and whatnot: they are trained to obey without thinking. That sounds mean, but when bullets are flying, your life depends on being able to act without thinking. A majority of these guys know alot about the art of war, but not the philosophy.

Uh, what government bombs it's own citizens during wartime? Isn't that slightly counterproductive? Or do you define "crime" as "bombing people"?Originally posted by Mattey View PostYeah, because the government regularly bombs it's own citizens. Oh wait, that doesn't happen and your post makes no sense.
Edit: and besides - deaths caused by government in the past 200 years is greater than, though it includes, deaths caused by war. Maybe they weren't bombing these people, but they were still killing them. But this is not a crime?Last edited by Jerome Scuggs; 10-20-2009, 09:20 PM.

No its not. That's a false comparison. A better comparison would be that a bank teller knows more about the computer system in her bank. She's been trained to use it, she's handled it before, and she has daily interactions with the system. You're overexaggerating my words too. I didn't say EVERY soldier, but the battle tested ones that have seen real combat. And yes, I believe they know vastly more about the costs of war than you and I do, considering they pay for it daily.Originally posted by Epinephrine View PostArguing that all soldiers who served there know vastly more than anyone else about the war in Afghanistan is like saying anyone who's worked in a bank (including tellers, the janitor, etc) know vastly more about credit default swaps than anyone else in the world.
What I'm saying is a soldier that served in war knows the feeling of having a gun between his hands. He knows what its like to shoot at another human being, possibly kill a person. He's had the experience of being shot at and being under extreme situations.
Chomsky could debate the merits of modern war until he's blue in the face, he'd still be the first to tell you he has no idea what it's like to stand and fight. That's experience you HAVE to gain. Soldiers (the one's that do see combat) get that experience and IMO know how to handle themselves in those situations better than the average person.

he does that to be purposefully cryptic and obtuse about things.Originally posted by Mattey View PostYeah, because the government regularly bombs it's own citizens. Oh wait, that doesn't happen and your post makes no sense.
really make him look that much cooler when society collapses (hint it hasn't happened before despite the predictions of far more lauded men than yourself). Scuggs can totally say, "I told you so" and live in his hell hole of a giant social-darwinism experiment.
