knowing ovechkin is a great player doesn't make you an expert, and without knowing or having expertise over your subject (so says plato....i hear he knows things) you cannot learn anything and have no right to speak about it. but hey thats just what plato says.

as for my previous comments, yes most of it was sarcasm, and no i don't believe what i said, but it is necessary to realize that the most efficient way to win a war is decimation of the population. that and having people of high ranking office in the invaded country take foreign brides (history proves this).

Your argument is that a soldier, any soldier, has a deeper understanding of what war is and what it entails, correct? Just want to get this straight before we continue.

Edit: and as to your figure skating analogy, I agree that experiencing figure skating can help you understand how it is judged, but is not strictly necessary. As a counter-example, I've never played hockey but know that Ovechkin is a great player.

But do you understand his greatness? You see him score goals sure, and deek defenders and what not, but do you truly understand the athleticism behind one of his moves? Do you know what the speed of the game feels like? What it means to have to face talent of that caliber and still perform as well as Ovechkin does? Maybe, but only at a most basic level. A former pro hockey player probably gets it on a completely different level than you do.

Well, maybe not all. For instance those like GWB that served in the Texas Air Bullshit during Vietnam, or the crazy ones asking for change on the corner, but any mentally fit former soldier probably knows more about the intricacies of war than you and I could debate in a million conversations.

To elaborate, In my opinion, most of the best critics are removed from the process they are critiquing. Being inside the system you are critiquing, I view, as a detriment. Better perspective is gained the further you are away from a subject.

How? I should not be a judge of figure skating. I know jack shit about figure skating and would be far from qualified to make a decision as to who has the best technique, smoothest run, etc. Same goes for war in my opinion. Some find it horrifying, some take to it like ducks in water. All veterans have more meaningful things to say about the experience than I do.
