  • Were you raised Conservative or Liberal? And has that changed?

When you were growing up, what political school of thought did you parents teach you? I'm not saying what are your views NOW, I'm saying what were you brought up to believe. Obviously, this could also mean Democrat or Republican or whatever.

My parents were always Conservative to the core. My Uncle was an MP and my parents even named one of our cats Mila after Mila Mulroney for good luck before the elections. :P

Nowadays I don't really feel close to any party so I'm basically riding the fence. B)

Never really talked politics with my folks. However, my dad's a libertarian, and that's the party I also identify most with.

i like it when i don't pay a lot of taxes and gay people only bone in their basements and only the ugly babies are aborted

also drill baby drill, but only in alaska and shit states like that. not offshore florida because that would mess up spring break

i guess you could say i was raised awesome and have gotten progressively more awesome over the years

I was raised moderate, I suppose you could say. Mother is a Republican and father was a Democrat, but both were pretty moderate. I am moderate but will probably always lean left because I'm a social liberal on all the big issues (except drug legalization) and I distrust people to the point where I believe true economic and bureaucratic libertarianism would only make worthless people more worthless, greedy people more greedy, and dumb people dumber.

I'd like to believe that people could spend all of their money in better ways than the government, and honestly in theory we could all spend our money better without filtering it through countless bureaucracies, but that requires a leap of faith in the average human that I simply don't and won't ever have. The majority of people are dumb as hell and the ones that aren't are greedy as hell because those are the two most rewarded characteristics in our society. Moderation in politics is crucial, and populists piss me off.

                            Ask and ye shall receive.

I was raised conservative. Very conservative.

Now, obviously, I'm a lot more moderate. I'm still very pro-life, but at the same time I'm also completely fine with civil unions. I'd rather not have them done in a church, but that is ultimately the church's decision. I guess I just don't want them done in the church that I attend. Other than that, whatever. It's their decision, not my problem. Yeah, some would counter me and tell me that abortion is the decision of the woman and I shouldn't be a part of their decision, but at the same time I wouldn't be comparing a union of two people with the fissure and demise of two others. I'm a fan of the death penalty, but not in every case. I think the crime would have to be particularly horrendous to deserve the death penalty, and the evidence against the criminal conclusive. I'm also not a fan of affirmative action. I just don't think it's exactly fair that I should have to pay my own way through school, even though I'm a good student, whereas my roommates get a full ride, even though they have rich families and aren't as good of students, because they are minorities.

Economically speaking, I'm kind of split. I'm an Econ major, so I'm getting exposure to both the Friedman side of things and the Keynes side of things. I mean sure, stimulating the economy during a depression might be easier for the government to do when people have a higher marginal propensity to save. If the government directly spends the money, then yeah, the economy will be stimulated. But, this is then at the expense of the people in the end, and by raising taxes for the wealthy, we could be moving onto the downward sloping part of the Laffer curve and hurting the economy even more. Also, government intervention is setting a bad precedent. I'm a big fan of free markets and capitalism, and even though we're all dead in the long run, generally things will be better off as the markets find their own way to work. So I dunno, I guess I'm probably leaning a little to the right fiscally.

Hmm, I'm starting to ramble so I'm just going to stop now. But yeah, I would say I'm pretty moderate but still leaning to the right a little. It's interesting to note that one of my brothers is now as liberal as can be, and the other is pretty libertarian.
