this europe = new york thing is really kinda funny, because it is obvious alot of you euros have never been to NYC. i mean, i have been a few times but all when i was less than 14 years old so i don't remember anything significant, but i do remember everyone being rude as fuck. i mean, downright fucking dicks. one of my ex's went to college in NYC for awhile and was mugged twice. two of my friends have been mugged there. on the flipside, i know people who are wealthier (or whose parents are wealthier), and they have had awesome stays in new york. so maybe my experiences are tainted by not being rich enough. :/

my best friends' cousins from the north, around NYC and in NYC, came down here and they thought everyone was stoned. they were amazed that you could stop and ask someone on the street, anyone, for a cigarette and a light. they also thought we all slept in beds surrounded by mosquito nets.

the charming thing about NYC is that it's the "melting pot" or whatever, culturally diverse, and here we have europeans (who ban burquas and clamp down on the free speech of muslims) comparing themselves to NYC? i mean c'mon. at that rate i could compare louisiana to new york and find some similarities, like what gen was saying.

for the record i'm not trying to hate on europe, but being as i am a southerner i feel compelled to talk shit about the north. say what you will, but i have two words for you: jersey shore.
Are you expecting people to be nicer in Amsterdam? On the whole Dutch people are kinda rude, also because they are brutally honest.

Although a lot Americans are nice, to us (and I can say us because I have heard multiple people from different countries in Europe say it who experienced it themselves) it seems like a very fake nice. Sort of like a: Yeah, I'll be nice to you, but that better mean my tip is better or you buy some of my shit. It just doesn't seem genuine with most Americans (most, not all). On the other hand, I think Dutch people could afford to be nicer, even if it's not completely genuine, but we are definitely not the friendliest people around. That's not to say that most Dutch people won't help you if you ask them, but you won't see them offering any help fast (obviously exceptions exist) while in NY I have seen it multiple times that people were asked if they needed help when they were standing there with a map in their hands looking around.

If you look at the US as a whole and their beliefs, etc. That includes generalizing stuff, then you can say that cities like San Fran and NY are more European, or more progressive than the rest of the country. That's true and I get what Xog is saying.

I find Americans to be the most openly nice people around in general. Most times I've been in the USA (and I've been there a LOT) people are relatively warm and friendly. This is probably due to Americans generally being the most extroverted people around (as opposed to most other places where people are much more introverted, and even more so to outsiders) as opposed to being genuinely good (people all over the world from smaller places are generally nice), so they will actually strike up a conversation with you and not worry.

On the other hand many other places people are downright rude (France I'm looking at you). Italians seem to be okay though in terms of Europeans overall.

          • Gall, those friends of yours must not have ventured too far into redneck country. I know of a dude who works downtown, he buys a subway sandwich every so often, like once a week, and gives it to the first homeless dude he sees downtown. i don't see any sort of "what's in it for me?" posturing.

but then again, it sort of works differently in small towns. for instance, about three months ago i was driving someone home from a bar at like 2am, i was stoned and a bit buzzed, and saw two chicks stuck at a gas station with a flat. i dropped off the person i was driving and came back and helped them fix their flat and then gave them money to air it up. i never heard from them again... until last night. after i got out of class, i saw someone i hadn't seen in awhile and we went to his place to smoke weed, and lo, the two chicks i helped months ago were at his house, sitting on the couch. i didn't have weed to match and so those hoes rolled up 2 blunts, and i got smoked the fuck out for free.

it's easier to be genuinely nice to people when it's a smaller city, i guess, just because there's a high chance of running into someone multiple times. it's like a small bizarre version of karma.

on the flipside, every tuesday when i drive to work there is some fucking CUNT who drives a red honda accord with a coffeecan muffler and a giant NY yankees logo on her back window, and i make it a point to cut her off every day. what a cunt.

            • This one time I was driving in Houston and there is this weird on ramp to the freeway, the other side takes you into a loop that takes you back to the feeder going the opposite direction on the freeway and the lane I was in gets you going on the freeway.

Anyways I saw this douche driving a smart car with a Hope and Change Vote Obama sticker on the back so I sped up in my F-150 Quad Cab XLT with my 5.4l v8 triton engine which easily overtook his piece of shit one cylinder engine and continued to speed up and slow down so he couldn't get over into my lane and had to make the loop to get back on.

But as long as people don't have retarded smart cars and have Obama stickers on their windows I am generally let them in.

                • Not going to lie, one time I was going to Louisiana for a crawfish boil and I stopped and had sex with my wife in the back seat of my truck in some storage container lot and we got onto the feeder from there and I rode on the feeder for like six miles and then it turned from a feeder to a country road/plantation driveway, I had to drive all the way back to the f'in entrance to the freeway, doesn't your state know what the fuck an entrance ramp is or a feeder for that matter?

ALSO when I worked at the Cajun Dome rigging shit for some WCW wrestling event, I almost fucking passed out in the top of that shitty roof, was probably 150 degrees up there.

                    • I'm sure there are differences between small towns and big cities, and as a tourist I'm sure I have mostly visited tourist areas where there is a lot more of a what's in it for me mentality. Part of it could also well be a cultural thing that I perceive it as not genuine, while in fact they are being genuine. And I have also met a whole bunch of Americans who are genuinely nice.

That said, like I said before, genuine or not, we could do with being nicer over here in the Netherlands. It's a lot more pleasant. I mean I noticed the same in Tokyo, those Japanese are insanely nice.

haha yeah those are the farm-to-market roads, i think they are called. they will run parallel to the interstate for a few miles and then take you to the middle of bumfuck nowhere.

my best friend installs dishes and receivers for DirecTV and sometimes i'll go with him to make a little money, and yeah, working in attics and on roofs in louisiana is deadly. he's an independent contractor, and everyone who works for the company he's with except for him has had a heat stroke this summer.
