I hear they don't even have to mention in the product if something is genetically modified in the US. Also kind of funny that the producer wants to call it a hybrid instead of genetically modified, just because they've transferred genes from another fish. I hope I never have to eat all these growth hormone meats in my country. Also not giving the consumers a chance to vote with their wallets (not telling them what they are buying) is against the capitalist ideology, or is it?

we have been selectively breeding things for thousands of years and faster bigger yeilds is always a driving factor. While genetically modifying things seems like a Frankenstein science with humans playing god and interfering with nature, bare in mind we have already exploited evolution and radically changed the animals we domesticated with some very bad practices for genetic diversity.

i have no love of making a quick buck or the mass farming practises that care only about profit rather than sustainability and animal welfare but the sad fact is if these salmon were inbred to achieve these same traits but also leaving them more prone to disabilities and disease through a weaker genome you'd not have that news article and it would be fed up to you on your plate, as that is common practice.

when you compare what they did to the salmon to what they do to GM crops, this is nothing. they just turned a particular gene off, they didn't make it start producing its own pesticides or anything.

of course, the FDA keeps all the relevant data and research confidential, so who knows? a capitalist economy flourishes on information, but governments find that the suppression of information is often very useful.
