That last hint was a give away but... I'm slow at this- how is it venus?

Do that for all lines:

2) S, C, E, P, T

4) H, U, N

I'M STILL confused. why would you only use E, V, N? What does "odd" have to do with it? What's the "first" and "second" have to do with this?

The clues refer to the letters in the words. The first is a letter in "even" but not a letter in "odd". In other words, the riddle is saying that the first letter is in even, but not in odd, the second letter is in "sceptor" but not in "rod", etc...
