The only album off hand that I've bought from 2003 was Lamb of God's "As the Palaces burn." It was decent.

      Hope was fantabulous.

Not really the same thing, since these didn't really come out this year, but I discovered them for myself this year, so it's my list for 2003. Not necessarily in order...

Sage Francis - Personal Journals (I don't think Hope measured up_
Non-Prophets - Hope (no personal journals, but sage is still the man)
              El-P - Fantastic Damage
Dr. Dooom - forget what its called, but I like it even better than dr. octo
Typical Cats - Don't know the name, maybe they only have one (thanks conc)
Modest mouse - long drive... (probably the only thing on my list that actually came out this year) they can do no wrong
Themselves - No music (thanks tric)
Funcrusher plus - Company Flow (el-p is a great man)
              aesop rock - Float
              Blackalicious - NIA
Dilated Peoples - the platform (not the most lyrically gifted, but straightforward hip hop and babu rips it like a fucking animal)

I pretty much discovered hip hop this year. There was always a few things that I liked, mostly where hip hop overlapped with other genres, but I never thought of myself as someone who listened to "rap". It turns out there's a lot that I like, I just didn't know about it yet.
              http://www.trenchwars.org/forums/showthread.php?t=15100 - Gallileo's racist thread

Beez, if you haven't checked him out yet, I highly recommend the MF Doom albums by King Geedorah (him producing) and Viktor Vaughn (him rapping)...

edit: and Mr. Lif - I, Phantom

My biggest discovery of 2003 was ska-punk, or more importantly the Mad Caddies. A band that hasn't sold out, doesn't spike their hair up and go skateboarding and are really talented to the extent that they play more than 3 chords. Really good band

You'd probably like Link 80's first album, Zeus.

edit: and definitely check out Catch-22's album Keasbey Nights. a ska-punk classic in my mind
