    M_M,
I notice that the TWD web site is pulling strange data from the biller. I assume this is due to the fact that the biller is being modified for the transition. When you say that TW will be back, does that mean with a new biller in place?

it's always the same people complaining, yet most of them will probably return to troll once we're back online. gosh.

our zone has been down for an extended amount of time a couple of times in the past and every single time we've recovered with almost no real drop in population. why would this be any different? sure, there is always going to be a few people that are going to quit, and some of them might be players that we're going to miss, but when considering the grand-scale of things those few won't matter all too much.

once the servers are up, we have to do everything within our power to make those new player stay. remember, first couple of days might look grim population wise, but after a while most should start returning, one by one.

would this new server have the same IP/name? i sure hope it will.

Trench Wars will be making a lot of changes when it comes back and that makes me very optimistic that we have a bright future when it returns. Perhaps this Ddos attack will just serve as a wake up call for the zone. Those constantly checking up on the forums just to say "TW is going to die" can just quit the game. Contrary to your beliefs, the game will be just fine without you.

PriitK! Tell him to login to Trench Wars. That would be hilarious. I haven't seen him since the last time we were LTing in pub one night when he was drunk as fuk and teamkilling everyone while calling them ni**ers. Good times! How about someone tell PriitK to upgrade Continuum like he has before to make it bigger, faster, stronger The game is in dire need of a face lift and he is the man for the job!

Oh this surely is a wake up call, and it should be. We gotta realise (if you haven't already) that we can't continue on the tracks we've been going these last few years. I have said this before, and I will say it again. As much as we as staff and as zone would like to move forward, we cannot do this alone. We need the players support, we need an active community and we need to work together as zones to save this game aswell, instead of just trying to save our own ass. Without the game there is no zone, with our current subgame server we can't make the changes that are needed and if and when we move to ASSS, it would be logical to have a new biller in place aswell, whether that's under SSC control or not, that is still up for discussion.

if u singlehandedly made a game that has had thousands of players, and you had millions of dollars to roll around in for helping make skype, wouldnt u pay the $10 a month to keep your game/resume booster running?

                i know i would

Props to all the people - staff and others who are and have contributed to the game via their time and work and looking at the future with a positive attitude, high hopes and a willingness to help out a project that is coming up on 20 years. Anyone who does not see that as a success is not looking at it right.

                  Wikipedia page:

SubSpace is a two-dimensional space shooter computer game published in 1997 by Virgin Interactive Entertainment (VIE)[2] which was a finalist for the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences Online Game of the Year Award in 1998.[3] SubSpace incorporates quasi-realistic zero-friction physics into a massively multiplayer online game.[4] It is no longer operated by VIE; instead, fans and players of the game provide servers and technical updates.[5] The action is viewed from above, which presents challenges very different from those of a three-dimensional game. The game has no built-in story or set of goals - LOL; players may enter a variety of servers, each of which have differing objectives, maps, sounds, and graphics.

SubSpace is widely considered an early entry in the massively multiplayer online genre due to its unprecedented player counts - ah the good old days

                  History

SubSpace evolved from a game originally called Sniper (1995), a project to test the effects and severity of lag in a massively multiplayer environment over dialup connections.[7] After its creators realized its viability as an actual game, public beta testing began in February, 1996, and it became fully public later that year. The game was released commercially in December 1997 with a list price of US$27.99 for unlimited play, requiring no monthly or hourly fees.[8] The game was originally developed by Burst, led by Jeff Petersen, Rod Humble and Juan Sanchez, for the US branch of the now-defunct Virgin Interactive.

When the game was officially released, it was not a commercial success due to a lack of marketing and the relative newness of internet gaming. Two years of playing for free became problematic as many players refused to pay for a game that they had beta tested for two years, and instead opted to pirate the software.

SubSpace server software being distributed with the commercial release of the game allowed users to host their own servers on their own computers, enabling them to preserve the game.

Once VIE went under in 1998, many of its remaining US assets were purchased by Electronic Arts, but the SubSpace license was not. This caused all of the commercially hosted servers, including the official VIE servers, to eventually go offline permanently, and independent user-run servers became the only choice for hosting zones, including original zones previously hosted by VIE.

Alex Petroukine (aka Sage386), a programmer from Russia released a cheat utility called Twister and also released a client called SubSpace v1.35 removing the security CD check, allowing for more widespread piracy.

Within a short time, a number of cheats in addition to Twister appeared,[4] and commercial game hacking programs took their toll on the game as well. In response, a server-side banning utility called BanG was developed; arresting the cheating epidemic.

The new BanG utility extended the banning capabilities of the server.

The Continuum client software is now the only client permitted to connect to the shared login server on the user run "SubSpace Central" (SSC) network of hosted zones.

Citing security and copyright concerns, the authors of Continuum have declined to release its source code.

SubSpace utilizes a client–server architecture. Initially, both the client and server were provided by VIE. The client executable was titled SubSpace while the server was called SubGame. A new client, titled Continuum, was created by players PriitK and Mr Ekted. The original server software, heavily modified, is still the most common, although an open source alternative, A Small Subspace Server, is now available.
                  Continuum client
                  Continuum Interface

Priit Kasesalu (aka "PriitK"), who has also worked on the development of Kazaa, Skype, and most recently Joost, developed the back-end including gameplay and security, and Mr Ekted developed the front-end. Continuum was developed as a clone of the SubSpace client, but now contains new original features exclusive to the client over the original. Continuum is the official client of the SubSpace Central Billing Server. It was developed primarily because of the failures of SubSpace mainly in security. The SubSpace client had been heavily analyzed allowing cheat programs such as Twister to modify the in-memory player data. Continuum boasts a new encryption scheme along with a number of other security-related features. Although a few attempts to crack the Continuum encryption have been made, none have been very widespread as the cheats are easily flagged or extremely obvious and the banning system is quite comprehensive.

The Continuum client was first released in 2001. The last version of Continuum (0.40) was officially made available on September 21, 2007. It has also been adopted by several zones, notably on the SSC server, as a requirement in order to play.
                  SubGame

The most prominent SubSpace server application is subgame.exe, which is derived from the original Virgin Interactive Entertainment server software and runs natively only on Microsoft Windows.[16][17][18]
                  A Small SubSpace Server

ASSS (A Small SubSpace Server) is an open source server that can potentially be run on any platform.

It was designed for use on Linux and other Unix-like operating systems, but can be configured for use on Microsoft Windows.[19] Both are downloadable from the SubSpace Central website. ASSS is under active development.
                  Utilities
                  Sub-O-Tronic

Sub-O-Tronic is similar to traceroute except that it repeatedly contacts each of the systems between a user and the user's target host. It aggregates the results, reporting what the average round trip time is, how much packet loss can be attributed to each hop, and so on. If a person is having trouble connecting to a host, Sub-O-Tronic makes it easy to identify where the problem is.

The SubSpace team wrote Sub-O-Tronic because of conflicts with server routing and their host (MCI) in 1996. In order to provide proof that the problem was with their host and not with them Sub-O-Tronic was designed to provide aggregate information and the team proposed a move to AT&T or Sprint.

Our priority is pretty simple right now: Serve the players the arenas they want. TWD has been the main focus. It's almost complete. Also, we've got a new new server coming up shorty that has a ping of 40 (on my end) as compared to the current TW AS3's ping of 120..
So along with an action-packed, comprehensive update to the AS3 zone (bots, database, arenas) players will also enjoy a nice low ping as they get themselves comfortable with the change.

It's also worth mentioning is that our TWD-Bot/TWD-Web database can authenticate users in the new zone. So there will be no issues in that department, besides the expected isolated incidences.

If the SSCU server were to come back online tonight -- then that will be great. It would immediately serve the players what they want. TWDev certainly wasn't prepared to meet all the player's needs so quickly, and never pretended for one second we could.

That being said --- I'm sure many of you are curious what's actually going to happen in the near future. The current ASSS zone online (SSC Trench Wars ASSS) is for development purposes, and has simply been a convenient place to serve the players.
However, even in the event that SSCU returns tonight, TWDev will continue development of TW on ASSS.
Anyone that's been itching for TW to take development to the next level and serve our players with a more advanced and intuitive/seamless gaming experience -- hang tight. We're doing it.

I am confident in our players. I've noticed their dedicated to TW, and their willingness to follow TWDev around to haphazard development zones. Our players have shown me that they will follow us wherever we need to go in the event that we have to find a new home to settle down and grow new roots.

Likewise, I am without a second thought confident in TWDev and their ability to get the job done. They grabbed the bull by the horns so to speak when SSCU went down, and they are continuing to invest looong hours -- (many of us all night, until the Sun rises and THEN some more) -- proving themselves to be dedicated, skilled, mature -- and, most importantly, willing to relentlessly swing their hammers at this paramount project we've signed ourselves up for.
THANK YOU PLAYERS for your continued interest, passion and dedication to this zone. Most importantly thank you all for your patience and understanding as TWDev continues to hammer away at this project.:smash:

I am 100% confident that you will all enjoy the next update.
                    Cheers.

                            • SSCU Trench Wars is back online.

Recap: On Sunday, March 30, during TWL finals, a lot of our players and bot started lagging. Shortly after this happened, our bot and web server was targeted and taken down by DDos attacks (over 6gb/s). We managed to break down the attack, and on April 1st, our bot and web server was back online. A day later they resumed DDos attacks on our bot and web server, so our hosting company took them down completely to prevent further damage. On April 3rd, both TW and EG's game server were massively DDos attacked as well (over 10gb/s) and were taken down by the hosting provider to prevent further damage. Shortly after, DSB was next on the target list, then HZ and the rest of the SSC zones were attacked as well. Whenever a new zone appeared or a zone came back online, attacks continued and these zones would overload again and die. Even our TW Development server was attacked, so it looks like it was a planned and thought out attack by someone with specific Subspace knowledge. We are currently in full investigation and cooperation with the authorities to find out who did this and bring him/them to justice.

While this certainly has shaken up our community and everyone who's still attached to the game in some way, we are confident that we will come out stronger in the end. An unfortunate event such as this brings people closer together and reminds us of the love and memories that we share for this game and this zone. It is essential that we continue to work together on the core aspects of this zone, that we remain active in Trench Wars and that we can find ways so we can all still enjoy playing this zone we all have grown to love for years to come. One thing this attack has taught us, is we are not alone. As such, we would like to thank our zones DEV and all other zones staff for their support during all of this and we would like to give special thanks to JoWie, tm_master, Cheese, SSC Staff and anyone else who helped us bring a temporary ASSS based zone online as quickly as we did. When all zones come together as they did, it makes us stronger as a gaming community and that much harder for someone intending to do harm to a specific zone to do as much damage and for that we are forever grateful. We would also like to thank everyone of you for their patience during all of this, helping and supporting us as staff throughout all of this and I hope to see you all back in Trench Wars shortly!

Great job getting TW back and running.

                              • What's ironic is the past few days, perhaps the past week I've been a bit nostalgic about TW and wanting to come back and play, and then I get the news item today that it's back up and that it's been DDoS'd by some jerk. If you're gonna 'round up all the usual suspects' I've got a name: bobr. Never trusted that troll.
