  • What's your history with Subspace?

I'm curious to see how many people played the game pre-Continuum and how they ended up in TW.

I started in 1997, when SubSpace was still in beta, v1.25. I bought the game when it went retail and still have the CD and Rincewind's strategy guide somewhere. Went from Chaos West to Powerball before quitting in late '98, then started in TW when I came back to the game in '01. I quit again sometime that year and came back again earlier this year.

i started summer of 2000 when one of my friends showed me the game. i spent alot of time leviterrring in pub and then joined eliteforcez because i told them i was a good jav and somehow they believed me. then, for league, i joined commodore army and started to wb. then commodore army merged with digressed and i started playing leagues for real and got serious into wb because there was no twlj, only twl (season 4) with the lower and higher tier and the pyramid league with twld and twlb. after that season i joined disoblige because i was more into basing than wb. but i got impatient with their wb skills (they weren't any good back then) and thought they were too european for me so i created stone with riarmada for twt. we did good in twjt and twbt and decent in twdt but i kind of grew out of basing and wanted to be with my digressed friends again so i joined shriek for twl season 5. right around playoff time, i couldn't enter tw for 5 months so shriek had to go through playoffs without me and later dissolved. i went out and enjoyed life but around december last year i got cable and came back to ss. i came back and quickly joined stone and then jumped to atheist but i felt i didn't fit in there so i quit that to recreate shriek with annul for twl season 6 (last season). for a bit i was a captain of it but decided i didn't want the responsibility after filling in for annul as head captain for a chaotic league weekend. so i was just an assistant until it dissolved around playoff time. at that time i was invited to rampage and i joined even though there was a roster lock and i couln't play in twl. after twl, rampage dissolved and i became an elitist squad hopper and joined pirates, aura, affect (aliased), shinobi, dynasty and a few newbie squads for fun like illamatics and pimp_house

I started Subspace in October of 99, when it was .35, so I've never actually had the CD but was around and saw it sold in stores around my area. I quit SS in 01 for six months because of school, and came back to find the record players shifted from 300 to 550. That amazed me. Now my computer is Fucked up so Im off once again, but I play every once and a while. Ill be back when i get my new computer $$

LMAO. I remebered seeing this game on TV, on some sort of old gaming show. And one day I was bored.... and I just thought of it, then I went on a mad hunt for a few hours lookin for it, and then I found it. Subspace 1.34 (I THINK, it was the Summer of 1999).

I Started in 2000. The 1st squad that invited me was Terrorists, 2 months after I started playing.

I played like 24/7 for 3 months, then went inactive for half a year.

I made a come back in 2001, then got on to No Surrender, and stayed in NS for almost 2 years.

Then I joined A-S and stayed there for 4 months.

After that I was in the following squads:

              Crisis
              ElfBot
              Spores

              Emmm, that's prolly about it.

Also I own the following names

              TelCat
              Photonic
              Ms. Arrogant
              Alt Nick

              (and more ...)

              and squads:

              Retry
              Validity
              Renewbify
              Flaggotz

              (and more ...)
              Wont die, no surrender 2

Played and watched my bro play during SS beta, quit when the retail version came out.
Played a while under demo_### or whatever they were but it was boring
Came back 20 Feb 2001 and entered TW cus I didn't recognize any other zones, this one had the lowest ping together with DSB and it had the most players on it.

My history is too complex and honestly, too fawked up to discuss. Suffice to say you would have to be 18+ to hear it and I could probably fill a fair sized novel with all the stuff Ive gone through; most of which having nothing to do with a 2d ship game.

                    Righty, where to begin

DSB - I started playing the game in Sept '99, I was showed the game by my mate Spathi_ who now uses the name Xu. We both played DSB and until dec '99/jan '00 I was in the squad RIP which changed its name to Darkside soon after I left and has only recently dissolved after winning shit loads.

Brit Squad - With my lag getting so bad I started playing TW, under the name PSYCHO_MIKE and joined British Squad. Their co-captain at the time - Sorted - went on a world tour so I stepped in and was the co cap. Valiant's computer then died so for about 3 weeks in April 2000 I looked after the squad, sending out the weekly email etc. I also arranged the Brit Squad Racing Championship where each week for seven weeks would race a track in ?go racing, the winner getting 10 pts 2nd place getting 6 pts etc... Lemmin won it, acidmouse me and val were up there somewhere.

^NEMESIS^ - After Brits me and my friend Mark (PyRoMaNiAc!) decided to set up a squad, so along with another guy we set up nem. This is where my name comes from. One of us had the incredibly nerdy idea of the three captains having the names of Gods, so I became ZeUs!, pyro was Hade$ and our mat Pete was Mars. That was kinda fun, didn't do dick all but it was fun all the same.

Unite and TWLeagues - After Nem about sep '00 me and Mark both joined Unite. Mark kinda quit around this time and Slowbob (Unite cap) was running the Trench Wars Leagues in his own zone, TWLeagues. Bob was looking for refs so I became a ref, and basically did all the smods work for them (including recruiting and training 20 refs in a fortnight in time for the leagues) so I was made a smod and Op>ZeUs!!. When TWLeagues merged with Trench Wars they took all the upper staff from TWL (me, Acid Twin - now Acid - Bob and Crome) and asked me to pick the best refs to take to TW which was only really Mantra-Slider, and I was made <ER> (claim to fame - I'm the only current staff not to be a zh).

Squadless - After Unite folded I pretty much was squadless although I never technically was without a squad. I just kept joining a squad which would dissolve so I'd join another one which would dissolve etc... Stone, Ink, Huppakko, WildFire and I could of others I forgot.

Unite #2 - After Stone dissolved I heard Unite were reforming. About this time I was made mod in tw, March 2002ish. So I joined Unite but it never really had the same feel as before and dissolved.

Dekai - Myself a Nailed! formed a squad, Dekai in Novermber 2002, which most of you reading this are probably familiar with. It had really good individual players, buy we just couldn't seem to hit it off as a team. This lasted through till April '03 which was about the same time I was made a forum smod. Late 2002 I had the idea of a Basing World Cup, and the first one of those was early 2003, the second was in the summer June time and the third will be just before christmas.

Evolution - Now I just piss about on Evo, a squad where about 50% of our members are either retired, lagged out or banned. But the chats great! Been there, done that, bought the special limited edition t-shirt which you can see in my sig.

i downloaded the game one day after school and entered chaos zone svs under the name za gophar. i got all of the controls down, looking off of the online newbie guide which no longer exists. after a week of that zone i was on the verge of giving up. i would fly around trying to kill anyone and i just didnt know enough to. whenever i entered an area with a lot of people i would die, and whenever i tried to fight someone 1v1 out in a vacant area they would run away (cause i was a neg).

finally i picked the zone with the highest population, entered it, and immediatly took a liking to it. i told some of my friends about tw, and for the next 50 hours i spent my time in a private arena dueling fighting with my local friends. they got bored of the game though, and i did not... and pretty soon i would just end up going to pubs and warbirding. i was eager to get 100 hours for elim and also to make a name for myself. for the first month i openly called myself a newbie. i remember joining my first squad, viper-x, and it dissolving in 2 days. then i joined g2_forces (which has recently been resurected), and that one dissolved in about a week. i still had the oppurtuinty to do a couple private arena squad duels though. i also dueled quite a bit in private arenas, and i remember trying out for one squad and getting radar shot and asking what their res was, and thats how i learned what a radar shot was.

finally i got 100 hours and went to elim... it was not all i had hoped, i went 5-10 a couple of times and went back to pubs. at this point i actually advocated cloakers and levis, saying that they had a hard time... but time changed that.

i should also mention my run with {TW_ELITE}. it really only lived four a couple weeks, then everyone left and only a few people were on it. we never ever did anything as a squad, and people were barely ever on, but i did not leave because i am pretty loyal to the squads i join. i finally left it about 6 months after i joined it.

since i was not interested enough in warbird dueling i had to build my name up some other way. so i went to every hosted event i could (and i aspired to be one of those elite <er> people). I had gotten pretty good at the game at this point and won quite a few of those events like dodgeball and such. the most important events to me were hosted basing events. i saw that the spiders tended to do the best in those, and that is where i realized that the best way to build up my rep was to become a spider whore. there were one or two good spiders in the zone that i looked up to and took notice of because they were spiders and not warbirds like everyone else. so i began striving to get mvp in all of the hosted basing arenas i could.

at first i thought mvp was based on rec, so i would rec whore. then when i lost a mvp when i had the best rec in the arena, i thought it was for most kills. then the same thing happened there and i found out it was for points. so when everyone else on my team was lining, i would be the one to go to the fr entrance and try to get into mid to get more kills than the rest of my team. i guess i was one of the first crammers. anyway, it worked and i got enough mvp's to get myself enough name recognition to be invited and picked in ?go #mythrandir. my success in that arena got me into dekai, which i stayed in for like a half a year.

also during that time i was still going to all of the other hosted events and was inspired by people like domi and arcane tactics who always kicked ass in racing2. i practiced there as much as i could and got to the point where i could kick everyone's ass who came.. and then i found ?go balance. since no one had really heard of this arena i knew it was a huge opportunity as soon as i entered it to excel in. after about a week i mastered the whole thing thoroughly, and have not even come close to losing the event ever since.. ive probably only seen it hosted about 5 or 6 times though. many people say i spend all my time either in balance or spidering :P

then mythrandir became ?go base, and two things happened to it: it started becoming the same thing over and over again and it lost its "special" quality by becoming public. so i got bored of it and started to spend a lot of time in pubs again. going back to pubs i realized that i absolutely hated levis and cloakers. this is when i became a trashtalker. i got so sick of levis and cloakers that i found myself in dsb.

i adapted to dsb pretty quickly, and i ended up being recruited onto a squad fairly quickly. i enjoyed basing in the death star, and i even played a couple of formal dsb basing matches with them, but eventually it dissolved, and i got sick of the pubs (the pubs are the only thing to do there besides matches... or were at the time).

then i went back to tw pubs for a while and went into a slump. i noticed though that many of the best trench players had a solid foundation in svs, so i moved to chaos for a couple of weeks.

in that time i became a somewhat better svs player.. average i guess. i can get a 1:1 rec with a average kill of about 90-100. the zone became boring again though because the only thing to do there is pub. so i came back to tw.

when dekai dissolved i made cyanide, and my main mistake in that was trying to lead it all by myself. i felt that i had to be online constantly or the squad would fall apart. also it was a hard time to get anyone to join because of leagues. we had a couple of good matches, but i ended up dissolving it because it took too much time and effort. maybe i will try to start a squad again later. one thing was for sure though, i had begun to prefer joining small, new squads as opposed to the best possible squad i can. it makes me feel more like i am a part of the squad's success later on.

for a while i spent time spidering in pub with no squad. i also fooled around a lot, tking levis and playing with portals. i hopped about 5 squads in four days, and then realized i needed a serious squad again.

then i joined existenze, and i started to strategize a lot in basing. my background in real life sports caused me to do this i guess. if you dont evaluate what you did wrong, you will never improve.

so existenze dissolved, and i joined war angels. unfortunately it was on the decline, so i joinedintrigue after it dissolved. that one dissolved in about 2 days, so i then joined elfbot. it dissolved in about a week.

finally i decided to join provoke, and i must say i like it a lot. the people are cool and we are pretty active in twd. as for future plans, im gonna go back to the elims and try to strengthen my dueling. currently i am an ok dueler, but i want to improve.

                      ^i doubt anyone reads that.

Hmm, I started playing sometime in winter 2000, when some guy from another forum board told me about it (Modslashxp3, I think it was). He said that TW was the best zone, so I started playing that. As I only had AOHell at the time, which meant I lag (which I didn't know wtf that was at the time), I kept lagging out so I stopped playing. A few months later, I started playing again in around June 2001 when I found it again. I also had a new ISP so I didn't lag as much.

spark_456 invited me to Eeks' basing chat, which was around the time that priv basing (#basing, #basers, #adman, #mantra, #bleen, etc) was around. I usually got picked to play spider (last picks though, and most of the time when it got voted to be 9-a-side). I started to get better, though, and get picked more.

I got asked to join some good squads and, Unite, as most of you know, is the one I joined. After Unite died, ZeUs!! and I made Dekai, which lasted around 6 months. Then I joined wr, but that got inactive so I left (annoying as when I left they decided to get active again). So Mantra, after I left wr, asked me to join Diso.

believe it or not i played for about 2 years....
i just spent the first 8 monthes (a very long time) flying around pub in a warbird, not even knowing how to attach
eventually someone helped me to use all the commands and told me what esc-a did!

so after lots of newb-like behaviour i joined a few squads.. and ended up with brits, now finding myself basing a lot more.... coz its more fun
