if you like vonnegut, you'll probably 'get' this guy too.

Also, there's a book called "lamb: the gospel according to Biff, Christ's childhood friend" by Christopher Moore... maybe it's just because I love the idea of jesus being naive kid that doesn't know what the fuck he's supposed to do, but this book made me smile a lot.

I know it's a total cliche, but i thought The Art of War by Sun Tzu was a pretty awesome book about conflict resolution/strategy.

also, On the Road by Kerouac, and Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller made pretty deep impacts on the way i perceived freedom, art, and existence.

Harry Potter 1-5 is the best books i've read. Don't know why I just got caught in them.

                    Graphic Novels

Sandman - Neil Gaiman (also, any related spinoffs all kick ass. Death: the high cost of living. Death: the time of your life, The Furies)
Transmetropoliton - (I can't remember who wrote it, but it reads like Hunter S. Thompson meets Neal Stephenson/William Gibson/yourfavoritecyberpunkauthor)
                    Preacher - Garth Ennis
The book of Magic - Neil Gaiman
                    Watchmen - Alan Moore

                    Full length fiction
                    literary type books
Whores for Gloria - William T. Vollman
The butterfly boy - William T. Vollman
At first I thought he was a stream-of-conciousness writer, but he just really likes long sentances. His language is full and gorgeous it almost made me dizzy. He's brilliant. However, the stories both contain quite a bit prostitution, just as a warning.

The Salterton Trilogy - Robertson Davies (includes Tempest-tost, The Leven of Malice, and A Mixture of Frailties)

We Have Always Lived in the Castle - Shirley Jackson (You probably know her for "The Lottery". This is a million times better)

                    not as literary type
Anything William Gibson (His best was Neuromancer, Count Zero, and Mona Lisa Overdrive, but everything is at least above average. P.S. Don't hate me for recommending him but not Dick)

Neal Stephenson: his best stuff is probably Snowcrash or The Diamond age. Zodiac is good, too. Everything else is too long for it's own good (meaning he doesn't do anything with the page count besides increase it) He suffers from what I term the "Neal Stephenson Disorder" where he feels like sex scenes make a book worth it and throws them in. They always suck.

Neil Gaiman - American Gods (it's a far cry from Sandman, but it's decent enough

                    Short Fiction
Sabina Murray's "The Caprices". end of story. Her language isn't as overpoweringly rich as Vollman's, but she certainly has her moments and it's never mediocre. Almost all of her charachters are round or at least feel that way. I don't have the words to describe how good it is. Her latest book (which I must steal because libraries don't seem to carry it yet) is about Cannibals, so if World War II doesn't float your boat, check out "A Carnivore's Inquiry".

                    Burning Chrome - William Gibson
A Rose for Emily - William Faulkner
                    anything by Hunter S. Thompson

I can't remember any of the titles, but Marget Atwood's short fiction is immensely pleasurable. This will do for now. I'd have recommended some Vonnegut, but bz beat me. Also definately check out Maltese Falcon, wadi was spot on with that. Also, wadi, wasn't the version by Dick called "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep"?

"Yeah? What would you have done?"
"First I would have corn-holed her, then I would have eaten her pussy, then I would fuck her between the tits and then I would force her to give me a blow job."
"No kidding, dreamer boy. You ever been laid?"
"Fuck yes, I've been laid. Several times."
                        "How was it?"
                        "Lousy."
                        "Couldn't come, huh?"
"I came all over the place, I thought I'd never stop."
"Came all over the palm of your hand, huh?"
                        "Ha, ha, ha, ha!"
"Ah, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!"
                        "Ha, ha!"
                        "All over your hand, huh?"
                        "Fuck you guys!"
"I don't think any of us has been laid," said one of the guys.
                        There was silence.
"That's shit. I was laid when I was seven years old."
"That's nothing. I was laid when I was four."
"Sure Red. Lay it on good!"
"I got this little girl under the house."
                        "You got a hard?"
                        "Sure."
                        "You came?"
"I think so. Something squirted out."
"Sure. You pissed in her cunt, Red."
                        "Balls!"
                        "What was her name?"
                        "Betty Ann."
"Fuck" said the guy who claimed to have gotten laid when he was seven "Mine was named Betty Ann too."
                        "That whore," said Red.

Anything and Everything by Nick Hornby

                          Especially:
                          High Fidelity
                          How to Be Good.

Al Franken is cool too, as is Michael Moore.

Check out Fast Food Nation as well.

Orson Scott Card, anything and everything especially Ender's Game.

History books by Bruce Canton is anything but boring.

                              Leo Tolstoy short fictional stories.

PS Vonnegut and Sun Tzu's the Art of War I also give two thumbs up.
