I listen to a lot of different music, but the only genre I really subcatagorize is metal. For example, here's some of the selections of the "metal" genre on my winamp music library: death metal, doom metal, power metal, thrash metal, folk metal, gothenburg, melodic death metal, etc.
For most people, they would all catagorize bands in those genres as "hard rock" or "metal" but I listen to so much of that kind of music, it's really important to me that I seperate them into seperate subgenres because it's much easier to sort the bands and there truly is a huge difference between all the subgenres.
Other than that, most of my rock is under "rock" or "hard rock" and most of the rap is "rap".
I think you don't really have to pidgeonhole all music like that unless you're a music snob, or REALLY into so much music that you care enough to do something like that.
