Well no, I think Spirits Within had something to do with Final Fantasy, just as all the games aren't the same nor based on the same story, the only thing linking them is Gaia. Spirits Within I think moved too far away from the Fantasy part, and instead went into Sci-Fi. Any of the FFs with Neotechnology and magic are Sci-Fi Fantasy(or Sci-Fantasy if you will) but Spirits Within went way too much into just being Sci-Fi. It was nice to see an original movie and not just a rehash of an already present game, though it didn't do as well as people hoped. That and I don't think they could have done a movie like Advent Children back then because it might have been too early. I am awaiting Advent Children like the rest of the gaming world... and hoping one day for a Zelda movie.
EDIT:
Just had this idea... would be IMMENSLY cool if Peter Jackson pulled out and did one of the medival FFs... Pete Jackson + FFVI or IX would be really cool.
I read somewhere that one of the head-FF guys said that if Spirits Within did well, they were going to remake FF7, but as we all know it was a flop.
I rented the movie "Steamboy" the other day, directed by the same guy who did the movie "Akira". I thought it was an alright movie, visually it was excellent, though. But, I remember when I first turned on the DVD, they rolled some trailers. The first trailer was the trailer to Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children, and I gotta say it looked fucking awesome.
I know, all movies that do with games suck. Well, except Mortal Kombat. Now, why did Mortal Kombat not suck? Because the movie was about the game .. a fighting tournament with Earth's greatest fighters vs Shang Tsung's Underworld combatants. It was what you wanted it to be.
Most 'Video Game Movies' are loosely based on the setting or something, but they try to go for a serious movie that really doesn't connect with the game they were doing.
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was victim to this one, having ... well ... nothing to do with Final Fantasy at all. This one will tie into what we all know and love and I think will be a much greater success.
FF Spirits Within was the worst crap I've ever seen.
But I believe that Advent Children will be a bit good, cause it follows FF7 storyline a bit.
I saw the trailer where Tifa fought against a dude, and he grabbed her legs and swinged her around and threw her at the wall, and she somehow manages to land gracefully on the wall in some kind of weird stance, and the flowers around just fly up cause of the impact, I just went *DROOL*.
DuelBot> You have defeated 'nessy' score: (20-11)
Nessy> i left for 3 years clean
Nessy> came back got on rampage, won twl, #1 in elim for 3 weeks, not even tryin, gg

I Luv Cook> I'll double penetrate your ass:/
Bitterness is like cancer. It eats upon the host. But anger is like fire. It burns it all clean.

If that's the worst crap you've ever seen... you haven't seen very much.
Everyone knocks Spirits Within for not being like the games... who said they wanted to make the movie like any of the games in the first place... and why does it HAVE TO be like the games... since all the games are different. This is Final Fantasy here, not Mario or Mortal Kombat where it has ONE SET storyline... FF: SW went with something different, and it did pretty good in Japan, but crap in America.
"There are those who said this day would never come. What have they to say now?" .Halo.
Y'know... if you were any stupider, I swear death by laughter would be a real medical occurance.

It HAS to be like the games otherwise the name is nothing but a marketing tool. Not only does Spirits Within not match any of the games storylines, more importantly, it didn't even FEEL like a FF game. Someone cited the Gaia reference as a tie-in, but that's weak as Gaia isn't even a major theme in most FF games. A closer tie-in would be the different types of spirits they had to find, but they took a short-cut and we don't even get to see them find them all. When they slapped the name FF on it, they attached the film to a license. They didn't have to make it a remake of a previous game. Just take a look at the plot for Spirits Within and imagine a video game version of it. Would that feel like a FF game to you?
It'd be like George Lucas making another Star Wars film but it turns out not to be about a galaxy far far away but the "War" between Hillary Duff and Lindsey Lohan. But don't worry, part of the movie takes place when they have a catfight over Aaron Carter during the premiere of Episode II, so it does have something to do with Star Wars.
Well if you've played the game for as long or as much as you've claimed, you would know full well the wait times that come with being a melee taru character, or pretty much anything that's not cookie-cutter. I agree that FFXI is supposed to be a major timesink, but I don't think that everything is expensive just to get you involved. Gilsellers have inflated the market far beyond the prices for some things than they were 2 years ago, and are still steadily rising.
Sure he didn't get to a high or even medium level (sorry SM, but 29 is just scratching the surface, 65+ is high lvl) , but again he's entitled to his opinion. I would actually think that because he only got that far that you would understand how little of the good and the bad that he encounted, and thus give him a break. He went through the dunes at least twice, and leveled up 2 mage jobs to 10 (which are a pain even with food, which I doubt he knew about). He had to deal with soloing and incompetent parties, which sadly is what usually makes up the first 25 levels of your job in FFXI. Khazam does have it's share of idiots but not in the quantity of the dunes or Quifim.
SM, what I think Broly was unsucessfully trying to get across, is that while it does have it's negative points (sometimes 3 hours of lfg if you are a 40+ melee, inflated prices, lonely idiots who make themselves feel better by being an ass online, etc etc), it's a truly immersive and detailed game. There is alot of quests and endgame stuff to look forward to, but as you can guess, it's an MMO. If you don't have a couple of friends or a linkshell, this game will just not nearly be as fun as it could be for you.
Oh, and buying the guide was a bad idea, smack the friend who suggested that. Patches and updates render the guide useless so fast it will make your keyboard spin.
thanks, tried to get it out like that without sounding like a douchebag but didnt work.
