  • my gas is so high, in CT. I think it's second highest in the nation, to California.

but it's cool because we are all rich and can all afford it.

      • I believe a few days ago, the news reported that the price of oil dropped $5 a barrel, but there was no change in the gas prices. Yesterday, they said the price of oil went up $10 a barrel, and now gas stations are expected to raise prices by around 6-8 cents per litre. What the hell.

In 2006, an Oregon market research firm released an incendiary 500-page report. Its claim: A Humvee (13 miles per gallon city, 16 highway) uses less energy than a Prius (48 city, 45 highway). Scientists quickly debunked the study, but the Hummer lovers got one thing right. Pound for pound, making a Prius contributes more carbon to the atmosphere than making a Hummer, largely due to the environmental cost of the 30 pounds of nickel in the hybrid's battery. Of course, the hybrid quickly erases that carbon deficit on the road, thanks to its vastly superior fuel economy.

Still, the comparison suggests a more sensible question. If a new Prius were placed head-to-head with a used car, would the Prius win? Don't bet on it. Making a Prius consumes 113 million BTUs, according to sustainability engineer Pablo Päster. A single gallon of gas contains about 113,000 Btus, so Toyota's green wonder guzzles the equivalent of 1,000 gallons before it clocks its first mile. A used car, on the other hand, starts with a significant advantage: The first owner has already paid off its carbon debt. Buy a decade-old Toyota Tercel, which gets a respectable 35 mpg, and the Prius will have to drive 100,000 miles to catch up.

Better yet, buy a three-cylinder, 49-horsepower 1994 Geo Metro XFi, one of the most fuel-efficient cars ever built. It gets the same average mileage as a 2008 Prius, so a new hybrid would never close the carbon gap. Sure, the XFi has no AC or airbags — but nobody said saving the planet would be comfortable, or even safe.

        • It seems that the oil companies are preparing for the worst before the worst arrives. In case some of you didn't know I work for a company that makes belts and hoses for anything from a bowling alley return belt to the belt drive on Harley Davidsons to the hose in your coffee maker that the water goes through. Currently we are working on finding a way to replace one of our main processing chemicals "butadiene" because the outflow has been redirected to the oil refining companies. Personally I live less then a mile from work and spend about 3 USD on gas a week :P . But I started wondering where the sudden materials shortages were coming from and was doing some research and found the worlds solution.

            • What I hate most about this, is that Americans just got this "Economy Stimulus" check sent to most of us. $600 if you're single, $1200 if married + $300 for each child/dependent. I would assume that a large percentage of that money is going to go right into peoples gas tanks, making the rich richer, and doing absolutely nothing for the economy it was intended for. Connecticut is now highest in the nation in pump prices. I pay 4.69 in my town. I'm considering buying a moped.

              • throwing money at people does not help off-set the costs of living, it just helps you put some gas in your tank for the next month and possibly fund a new television you wanted to buy.
it makes me sick when i think of it, all my heroes could not live with it so i hope you rest in peace cause with us you never did

Rich people didn't get them. The middle class got some, but as the annual income got higher, the check got smaller and smaller.

"Yeah americans have a very wasteful way of life compared to europeans. I've never ACTUALLY been to Europe, but I've seen plenty of pictures and shit. I read a brochure once too, so it must really be like that all over the continent!!!!"

I was referring to the oil tycoons getting richer. I got a 600 check and more than 2/3 of it went towards Gas/Car Insurance
