          It's both their jobs.

Yahoo News is a seperate entity. They attempt to be a reliable source of news, just like a newspaper, cnn.com, etc. They have just as much of an obligation to check their content as those other agencies who receive their articles and photos from the AP, Reuters, etc.

They do have that obligation, but they don't have an obligation to check two different stories like in the sample and compare them with each other. The only reason those two articles were controversial was because of that contrast. On their own, there isn't an issue. Judging by how those two articles were spliced into one image, they weren't even located together. If the AP referred to all examples (regardless of race ) of people "finding" stuff as looters, and the AFP referred to them all as just finders then the problem isn't Yahoo's, it's in how the two news agencies operate.

The media is a little biased, since most of the reporters aren't african american. They only feel for their own kind. In my opinion what they call looting is when you see a person with a freaken tv on his head. When it comes to food I call it survival. The food is gonna go bad anyways so might as well use it for a good cause.

                        Bullshit.

There isn't an issue if you don't think it's a corporate responsibility to be culturally, and socially conscious. As a corporation, they not only owe it to their stockholders to not make culturally insensitive oversights, because it can damage their profitability, and their credibility as a news source. Less credibility=less readership=less profits for their stockholders.

As a news organization, they have a journalistic responsibility to not appear to be overtly biased or grossly insensitive to any particular culture. In this case, they failed miserably, again demonstrated by Evasive.

I'm assuming, since you're a teacher, that you've taken either an advanced English class, or maybe even a journalism class. You are taught to be very congnizant of everything you print, and how it can be misinterpreted, or appear biased in a particular way. Some papers, news organizations, etc. expolit that bias to a particular advantage to become more profitable (Fox News, for example). If they didn't know, they should have.

Please explain to me how Yahoo! is realistically supposed to deal with two articles, out of who knows how many, where 1 has a white person said to be a "finder" and 1 has a black person said to be a "looter".

For all you know, there may be 50 articles where a white person is said to be a finder and 50 where he is said to be a looter and 50 where black person is said to be finder and 50 where he's a looter. There are a gazillion articles on Katrina out there, any moron can find 2 where a picture is captioned differently and the race happens to be different. Or do you expect that every single article must use either "finder" or "looter", and that they need to set some kind of standard on it? Or that all articles must reserve their pictures to only people of one race?

yahoo isn't a news company. They just link information. They don't make money with news stories. They don't pay people for news stories. They just find news and link it. They don't have a news editor. This has to be one of the stupidest threads on these boards.

If it's not Yahoo, its the AP, since they supplied both those pictures/captions.
