whales are in deep population decline. to say the japanese have every right to kill them for some whale aphrodesiac is pretty silly. especially when the rest of the world has agreed to not hunt whales.

So your theory is that everyone only ought to eat things raised or grown in a person's own country? Or is your theory is that everyone only ought to eat things raised or grown locally?

Which animals 'belong' to which others? Do gazelles belong to lions? Is it ok for one lion pride to move from one area into another area already being hunted by a different pride?
I am interested in learning more about your perspective concerning ‘having a right’ to hunt other animals.

Killer whales hunt and kill other whales for virtually the sole purpose of eating their tongues, leaving the rest of the whale carcass to rot. In nature, waste of resources is not limited to humans.

One species preying upon another species to the point of extinction is something that has been going one for millions of years and certainly isn’t limited to humans.

What is the ‘food chain’ all about? Why would an animal (like humans) evolve to the top of the food chain?

Ehm its very different to cows ...

we FARM cows , we don't FARM whales.

They are a wild animal that we once hunted at an unsustainable level.

Telcat was saying that the Japanese (northern hemisphere) were going down to antartic instead of the closer Artic becuase the Norwegians and the russians would be pissed off at there whaling boats in their territory.

Even if you don't object to whale hunting surely you object to the fact that such large numbers are being killed under "science" to get around the pact that was aggreed by all but Norway that commercial whaling should stop.

I'm not sure what the whale population is doing right now but to see these sort of numbers , which are obviously commercial , being hunted under the disguise of science disgusts me. I'd rather the Japenese pull out of the pact and call it commercial whaling than this. They are whaling at nearly the same level as before it was stopped and yet its for science ...

In general we are completely over fishing the seas and many species are in decline. We need to get are act together and bring in stricter quotas to ensure there will still be fish to eat ifor future generations.

We treat the oceans like a limitless supply of food, they aren't. We don't sow fish and we don't look after there environment. Instead we pollute the seas and fish at an alarming rate that most scientists say could lead to a collapse in some of the common fish we eat like cod.

                            Actualy this is not true.

The whale actually eats a bit, thats what motivates it. What other species whould hunt elephants and rhinos for there pretty tusks?? Money motivates us there...

In almost all cases the hunting spieces lives in balance with its prey, if there is an increase in prey later this is followed by an increase in predator and if there is a decline then the predator declines. It serves the predator no purpose to hunt its prey to extinction and they are therefore generaly not a boom and bust species. Generaly what would cuase an extinction is when something affects the prey, like a lethal disease, climate change, meteor etc...

Also it dosen't really matter, the fact is we consider ourselves more intelligent than the rest of the animals and we actualy know that we are hunting species at an unsustanable rate, releasing vast amounts of toxins like murcery into the enviornment. Surely that is in a different context to an animals instinct to hunt and survive? Did they know they were making another species extint?

We are top of the food chain becuase we invented tools. This dosen't make us god's amongst animals giving us the right to wipe out other speices when ever we want something of their's , be it fur, tusks, meat or tiger penis. If we are so intelligent we should be using these tools alot more responsibly than we are currently doing.

You're right, very differnt. The pollution, extreme land usage, and genetic modifcation of farm stock are signifigantly more destructive than whaling. The sea, not the small percentage of farmable land will be the future food source for populations that easily overload the supply capabilities of land based food stocks.
