You seem to be using the financial reasons to support why they shouldn't get the right to marriage, but someone can just as well say that by outlawing gay marriages, you're denying gays from ever receiving those benefits. If you don't like gay couples receiving those benefits then you should also dislike straight couples from receiving them too.

Nah, I'm not against the right to marriage, I'm just pointing out that 1) it's not entirely a matter of "they can do whatever they want as long as it doesn't bother me" since it does have an effect, and 2) there are additional good reasons for why same-sex marriages are important instead of simply keeping it in the closet (besides the pride/acceptance issue).

My point in originally posting this thread was to note that I respect & commend the changes in law allowing this to take place. This was not to mock or dispute the legal changes in this type of union.

Congrats again for the lawmakers that allowed this to take place and perhaps it will open the narrowed minds of other Govt. leaders and politicians to stop the religious zealots running amok.

I personally do not care one way or another if someone is gay or not, but there is no reason I can see as to why the union of two people who love one another can not be granted the same respect and rites of a heterosexual couple that marries. Insurance, health, retirement benefits should not just be for heterosexuals, as it stands for most within the narrow minded laws of the States.

In Canada same-sex marriages are treated exactly the same as straight ones. I'm quite certain they can adopt children.

Speaking of same-sex marriages and gay rights.. The NDP strongly supports equal rights for all couples. The recent victory in Canada which allowed same-sex couples to wed was helped along by the NDP and the Supreme Court. Of all the federal parties the NDP was most staunchly committed to equality. This is something I'm very proud of.

It still took the Bloc, the NDP and your nemesis! Spider |THE LIBERAL PARTY| to get it passed and even then there was some descent within the ranks of those parties over this issue. I still think Harper will do anything in his power to destroy the equality and freedom we've gained, I wish more people would see that before looking at their credit card bills with the the 10 second sound-bytes about tax cuts or an NDP flyer.

The only way he could do it is if he use the notwithstanding clause which was only used once before on the provincial level in Quebec to over turn a Supreme Count Rulling on a horriable language law. He has said he wouldn't use it though so his very stand on the issue, which he's being very hush hush about, is more clouded then ever.
