Tara Rose McAvoy, 18, was walking Monday near railroad tracks when she was struck by a Union Pacific train, authorities said.

A witness told Austin television station KTBC the train sounded its horn right up until the accident occurred.

Hmm...I guess she got lost from playing in the middle of the highway?

"Austin police say McAvoy text messaged her mother just minutes before the accident happened.

The 18-year-old said she was going to take a short cut down the railroad tracks to meet her mom at work.

"We believe she may have been sending text messages to friends and family as well during that time," Fugitt said.

That's a factor, police say, that could have kept her from noticing the train."

Wouldn't a deaf person be able to feel the massive rumbling of the earth as the train approached? I sure feel it when I am close to a train, and my senses aren't heightened.
