The God Delusion - Richard Dawkins

This is a light and humorous read but nonetheless still manages to systematically prove the unlikliness of God. He dedicates some chapters to this very reason, another couple of chapters on where we get our morality, some other chapters on the bible and it's monstrousities and one on religious children. "...entertaining, wildly informative, splendidly written...we are elegantly cojoled, cleverly harangued into shedding ourselves of this superstitious nonsense that has bedeveilled us since our first visit to Sunday school" - Ron Liddle, Sunday Times.

It's an amazing insight into the debate and is very, very compelling. It won the Galaxy Book Award and consequently got Richard Dawkins the Author of the Year in 2007.

I can also recommend 'Unweaving the Rainbow' by Dawkins and 'The Selfish Gene' by Dawkins if you would like something a little more tasking to read.

This is not what I said, but I like the way you started and ended that comment. Did anyone else notice the irony?

Not that 'why' I want to argue this point is of much consideration, but I guess it's just me exercising my rights to talk about it. I don't see myself as intellectually superior than every religious person. It's ok for me to comment on demographical statistics without asserting this completely emotive stance you have postulated. For me, religion is damaging and an indoctrinating institution which prays on the intellectually weak (but is not limited too of course because you get a lot of religious scholars). To be able to reject scientifically proven fact in the name of faith necessarily requires you to dispose of evidence provided. This infers irrationality or ignorance which are linked to intellectual inferiority. Of course you will get intelligent people who will be religious and unintelligent atheists, it's just a general trend based on the rationale required to reconcile these two belief systems.

well i'm not looking for something opinionated. usually summaries just give the facts and try to leave out bias, which is what i'm looking for.

        • A book without bias is a book without a writer. A book you find correct is one that is in harmony with your own identity.

          • if you just want summaries, http://www.gotquestions.org/Bible-summary.html is pretty good

answering "can someone summarize the events of the bible for me" with "god delusion lol" is the most douchey thing yet in a thread full of douchery

              • I'm not sure if you were looking for purely religious information but I would suggest the "The Perimeter of Ignorance" by Neil deGrasse Tyson as oppose to Metal's suggestion. He is generally less abrasive and hostile then Dawkins.

Unfortunately racism is only defined (in accordance to Trenchwars rules) by someone using a specific racial expression, e.g. 'n*****'. Actually expressing a racist opinion without using specific language isn't illegal apparently.

yeah im pretty sure i can say things like ignite is a ---- and somehow not really get banned, but if i say the N word then i get banned

but what if im talking about a religion that could be confused as a racial term? like say im talking about judaism, well thats both a religion and a race

so i think its discrimination for people to say christianity is garbage and the bible is garbage when if i say in the game "your a fucking jew" ill get banned but if i say "your a fucking christian" then no ban

                          • I was being sarcastic Exalt and we don't need examples, next time I'll use the sarcasm tags. Everyone knows that both are illegal and he wasn't posting a "racist opinion". There is a potential for a mix up between the Jewish religion and the ethnicity because both are intertwined. That is not so for Christianity, and while I would hope for better understanding between those who follow different religions and no religion on this forum giving it any kind of protection would go against my own principles and that of a tolerant community. That's not to say a couple trolls here and there don't need the boot from time to time. And in either case a derogatory comment about Jewish people is always meant against the Jewish race and culture.

                            • technically any time you voice your opinion that mentions race in any manner, you are being racist

(so that statement above is racist, as is this one)
