As I said before, you really can't throw all atheists into a certain mold. I've known many an atheist in my time whose sole source of satisfaction (woot for alliteration) has been taking shots at others' beliefs. I've also known those who aren't that way. The main idea here isn't guessing what the general behavioral trends of atheists is, but rather observing that there really isn't one.

It's just so unfortunate that a cunt like me actually has the capability to think about the arguments rationally. It just really must suck for you.

For the record, I am a secular atheist. I believe not only that God is unlikely to exist but that religion should stay the fuck away from politics because it gives people a certain authority I dislike and I believe to be harmful in some cases. Also, I don't hate religious people (dispite my 'fuck religious people' remarks, by the way I mean it more like, 'fuck some aspects of religious peoples' character and the many bad deeds done in the name of religion' - but you weren't to know).

But either way I think it's time to start speaking loudly as secularists especially with the growing power of christianity in congress and the growing Islamic fundamentalist institutions such as the Saudi Wahabists. I think it's also time we started to make the distinctions between religions and see which ones are actually causing harm and which aren't.

So let's start with Islam. For those of you who do not know, I'm reading for a degree in Economics & History and I'm currently looking into Islamic and Middle Eastern History. What struck me in my studies was that Islam is a different, much more violent, much more fundamental, much more 'immoral' religion to even Christianity on a purely doctrinal level. It takes 'Shariah' law to be absolute which imposes extremely restrictive and draconian rules on women, homosexuals and infidels. Moreover, it requires an absolute belief in every part of the scripture which isn't necessitated quite so much in other belief systems. When considering that the 6th 'commandment' (the exact word escapes me) is Jihad (essentially the notion that Islam should be spread and expanded by peaceful AND IF NECESSARY violent means) it is not difficult to understand why such atrosities are commited everyday in the name of this tyrannical and indoctrinating institution.

I am sickened each and everyday by religion and it's dogma. I grow bitter and this forum and my friends and family are the only places where I can safely speak out against religious fundamentalism and I'm talking predominantly about Islam. This is because this world is a place where growingly, and through the fault of the mindset imposed by religion, anything goes in the name of God. Anything. I think we have to look at these issues very closely and confront them (not necessarily violently).

A lot of you have tried to make these distinctions between liberal and fundamentalist; you might say....'well, Islam is a fundamentally peaceful religion and the extremists have misinterpreted the messages'. I would argue the contrary: that Islam has within it very unambiguous messages of patriarchy and general immoral dogma which allow people to do heinous acts. It is the moderate who looks differently at such messages and interprets them 'liberally'. I'm fed up of the moderates constantly protecting this extremism with this false argument that their precious religion is so fucking peaceful and divine and holy and enlightened and these evil people are corrupting these messages. BULLSHIT. I think we need the liberal reformation and contemporary contextualisation of religious ideologies and a strong political movement of secularism.

I would say no. I think most people are more concerned with their own stuff, and with fundamentalism, authoritarianism ect... then with what someone else believes. MetalHeadz is a rare exception but not a characterization of an atheist, an agnostic or any where in between.

Obviously you've made that assumption incorrectly based on what I have written under my nickname. Moreover, it's obvious you, like most of the members of this forum, are quite content in your opinion in as much as you don't feel it necessary to ask such questions. The information I have is to provoke questions, not assumptions. Which brings us back to the foundational motive of the masses; which is to ridicule any manifestations of thought that greatly differ from our own. Simply speaking, "I don't care and I don't want to care any more than concluding that 'I am better than you'".

It'd be putting a pretty face on some ugly opinions, we'll need to tell the people you're agnostic and that you don't think their intelligence is solely based on their belief or disbelief in god. We might just need to lie and say you believe in a god, this is politics after all.
