Ok here goes (o noes I broke my word).

First off, new found respect for Christian Bale after seeing the Machinist.

Second, Johnny Depp is a great actor, personally I find Tom Hanks better. But really, you cant compare these two on the roles they have played. They are completely different. Same as you cant put Johnny Depp in a Morgan Freeman role and the other way around. It doesn't work, no matter how good they are (yeah, bring the racist joke).

You could possible compare Johnny Depp in Blow with DeNiro and Pacino. But in the end, there is typecasting for a reason. There is a reason Morgan Freeman gets casted as the old guy and not as a teenager (oversimplifying to make my point) and there is a reason Johnny Depp gets casted for Pirates of the Caribbean and not Tom Hanks.

Personally I think Tom Hanks is slightly better than Johnny Depp.

As for Adam Sandler, I love the guy, but not for his acting abilities. Ben Stiller is better, but still not great. I have to give Brad Pitt a mention purely for his role in Snatch, overall I don't think he is that awesome.

I do wanna mention George Clooney, I think the guy is pretty damn good. Other actors I like a lot, in no particular order, are Jim Carrey, Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Dustin Hoffman and Tim Robbins. And lately I have been liking John Cusack and Joaquin Phoenix.

I love it how an internet discussion about something like favorite actors or whatever turns into heated discussions about some being wrong. How can anyone be wrong by stating that they like X better than the other? What can anyone gain by arguing their taste over others?

You're right but the difference is that NoLimitSoldier started telling people their opinions are wrong, you can't be wrong in this debate but you can tell someone else their wrong.

edit: I still gotta agree with LB, most of the actors you've listed are shit, or in most cases lack a real understanding of that actors ability. I personally wouldn't take any movie recommendations from someone who enjoys Ben Stiller's work, besides Zoolander and Something About Mary that guy has done nothing but produce shit work and shown he's not a real actor.

the burbs is one of my all time favorite movies. you're also forgetting about philadelphia which was a good'er. look, this is just a matter of preference so no one's wrong. depp's good, hanks is good, but one thing's for certain; past happy gilmore and billy madison sandler sucks dick. the fact that he made your top five refutes any kind of argument you'll present.

i agree with most of what the legitimate people have said. some notes to add about a couple specific performances:

tom hanks for castaway. if you watched this movie and enjoyed it, think for a second. hanks was able to keep you captivated for an hour and a half by being the only fucking person on the screen. the. only. one. thats amazing in its own right.

my favorite scene ever is the restaraunt one in five easy pieces (nicholson). lol, 'i want you to hold it between you knees'
there are just some one liners that are great, and this is one of them. especially in that raspy drawling voice of nicholson's.

i agree with depp being able to take on a variety of roles and doing them well.

probably more words about good actors that i dont care about enough right now to put the time into to type

dont think anybody would be putting them up for best actor ever, but they are consistently good, and show up in a number of my favorites movies.

i tend to lean towards cult classics, and i love watching movies where the actors are recruited mainly because of a close relationship with the writer/producer (i.e. Owen Wilson & Wes Anderson, Bruce Willis & Quentin Tarantino)
