Thats not really true anymore epi, since the terrible idea of using solar panels and windmills as a power source has sprung into being in the last five or ten years nuclear/coal/gas power plants now have to "reinforce" the power that people buy from "green power companies" during night time and when there is no wind, or when there is too heavy of a wind that they have to stop the windmills from storing power due to battery capacity. So the energy isn't being "wasted" really at night as much as you would think it would be.
Also 40miles on the electricity with what I would assume would be around 25 miles or actual top performance from electricity before the charge started to wear down to the point where it was undriveable especially on the freeway. I see this as being more of a problem than a solution, and I don't think most people will even bother to plug their car in after a while of dealing with it. And what are the hidden costs with this, batteries can only recharge so many times before their capacity is lowered, after lets say three years maybe or even less I would expect the batteries to only take you 20 miles, 15 miles, and I am sure the batteries are going to be not only expensive to replace but also detrimental to the environment that the idea of an electric car is trying to save. Are they going to have specialty dumping sites for old worn out electric car batteries?
So yeah, the technology is basically useless unless someone comes up with a battery that is far beyond the capabilities of the technology that we have now, and is probably more detrimental to the environment in the long run than using gas, not that I care much about the environment but I just want to make sure you understand it from what I assume is most liberals perspectives.
