VW Jettas are really nice for the price and are great family cars. If you get the TDI (turbodiesel) version, they get crazy good gas mileage. They're rated around 40 but they honestly get up to 60 if you do mostly highway driving. Edit: even with nice options, you can come out well under $30k.
