I like the way you think xog. Its not that I think I am important here, but I got banned for a month for the same thing I always get banned for, except this time I'm not going to sit around with my thumb up my ass waiting for my ban to end. I won't be coming back. Personally, I think if you put people in charge that actually knew how to 'lead' other people irl, they would perform well here as well, as compared to all the dumb kids enforcing all the dumb rules of TW.

Edit: Think of the cumulative effect.... I knew of at least 10-12 people that would only sign on during weekends to listen to my radio shows. Thats 11-13 people you lost because some kid has an itchy trigger finger. Most people play for the community and the chat client. Keep shunning people from the game, and their friends are going to quit too, and then their friends...etc

      Keys To Regrowing The Population

      1) Fix All Lag Issues
      2) Offer Incentives For People Creating Blogs (blogs get hit up by search engines alot, use key words online, game, fun, trash talk, space)
      3) Offer A Player Incentive For Supporting The Game (people who pay 20 dollars a year can get games hosted regularly 1-2 a week)
      4) Use This Money For Advertisements
      5) Get The Rest Of The Tw Zones To Chip In For Long Term Advertisements Like at Ebaumsworld.com, Extremefunnyhumor.com.
      6) Let Players Nominate Staff

Disagree except for point one, which is valid but totally outside the control of the people who own the server, let alone the volunteer players who run it.

Using money for tw promotion is unlikely, you make it sound as if running the servers is break even now.. it isn't. Someone is paying for our servers and bandwith as it is (priitk still?), Throwing more money into the game isn't likely to be received well. As far as donations go, it sounds good but will hardly (if it all) cover the costs just mentioned, and I doubt it will be that practical (we had a donation program a while back).
Furthermore we need to increase accessibility to the game and the attractiveness of the game before even considering attracting people who have never before played the game (I would gladly refer you to my previous post and similar points from other people), as there are a lot of players signing up all the time, but hardly anyone sticks around to get out of the proverbial pub 7.
And just out of curiosity, who would you vote for as staff? (Point being that the average ss player is more or less a douche and will result in a similar staff ruining a zone). The current staff are all doing there best and there has hardly ever been a time when I felt someone really shouldn't have been made staff, some oversensitive racism things aside, which is mostly my fault for being a jerkoff anyway. Staff is hardly the key to improving the zone.
That said I'm not trying to put you down, just showing that although the ideas are good, they are not practical.

Edit: why are there people complaining about being banned? Most of the people that know me ingame know I am a jerkoff most of the time, trying to go for the edge. Yet in 5 years here I've only ever been banned once for a day for deliberately hunting someone in elim together with a couple of other players, after ignoring a warning even. Most people I know are in a similar situation. If you really want to be a douche and try to spoil other people's game, then yes, you deserve being banned (and from those 10 people how many of them do we actually want in our zone? I think 1 would already be a high estimate)

Edit2: Yes Jeem, this game has grown mostly from ear to ear promotion, see if we can expend that a little bit =)

Not saying im planning to vote on anyone right now, but it would be nice for the community as a whole to nominate 1 person a year. Then money im talking about donating is purely for advertisements, not running the server. All of these points can ezily help the zone out. Ebaums alone gets a few million people a day clicking shit, why not ss.

Staff does make to help the zone a better place, there are a few great mods that go above and beyond to make ss better, one being Stargazer and his 24 hour hostathons. But some people who would make good ers are the ones who know the arenas and are on all day long doing nothing. Shit might as well get some of those people involved.

many of you remember shitloads of players in TW, i still remember when there weren't.

tw was negatively impacted by excessive amounts of dumb events being constantly spammed to the zone. tw was negatively impacted by trying to pretend it was something else with crazy tilesets and subgames.

tw survived for many years while "superior" games were introduced. you cannot simply chalk it up to better games. you can chalk it up to a watered down userbase as the bulk of proactive and mature client/game supporters during the peak are moving on with their lives (why must they be playing wow? people just move on)

you guys that are afraid of a message board post ruining the taste in a newbie's mouth because there are more players than bots? hide the truth? what kind of crap approach is that?

consolidate staff, consolidate leagues and game offerings. focus on the best, and most popular. let everyone else whine and go play something else. with a few quality offerings which get ALL of the zone's spport, the community can enjoy a consistently fun game how it was ment to be for years still to come.

you know, way back then I didn't come on to fighting over what games to host, spam, 50 arenas etc. I came on knowing I wanted to either play the pubs, play elim, have a death match, or it was a league day (sure minigames were hosted here and there, but these days it's annoyingly gay).

instead of a clusterfuck of random shit in the zone, how about trench wars as trenchwars. that way people get as advertised, and either like the damn game or not.

oh and if it dies, it dies. it's had a long run as an active online community.

alternately, if someone had ever got the linux port completed or priit decided he had moved on 100% and released all code to a trusted coder to port...it could be a trendy game to stick with any distro cause of small size. offering in the repositories could keep random interested people coming by.
                  I agree.

Yes. Back when I started, 90% of all events got people good at the skills required to play in leagues, and in my opinion, the two things that give this zone staying power are the leagues and the social aspect. The thing is, the leagues contribute immensely to the social aspect of the game. Joining a new squad is like having 20 new potential e-friends.

Back in "the day" (I haven't been around as long as some of you but I've been around a lot longer than most of you) you played pub, deathmatch, elim, or baseelim, and occasionally something stupid like fishies or zombies was hosted, but rarely. You were forced to get good at the basic TW skills until someone noticed that you were good and you got invited to a squad. I feel like people nowadays just play the hosted games until they get bored of that. Maybe you try joining a TWD squad but you're just going to get slaughtered.

Aside from the stupid minigames, I also think that javduel, wbduel, and (maybe even) ?go base are also a problem. The guys that used to ask for deathmatch or play elim, baseelim, or pub are all in exclusive games that a new person can't even get involved in. Back in the day, good squads pubbed and I would think to myself "holy shit, how can I get as good as them." Now, the new folks aren't inspired (as lame as it sounds) by the good people.

I've noticed all these problems because my skills are negligible at this point in time and there's pretty much nowhere I can go to enjoy playing TW anymore. I can only imagine it's worse for a new player.

edit: Did anyone notice how lizard fuel tried to blame the declining tw population on the mods that banned him? That's pretty funny, because nobody likes that guy, but there is a vestige of a point there. I was banned for ?help abuse the other day by some jackass who was obsessed with following the rules when I was just sending a friendly message to staff about how I was glad that they got rid of Mr. Arrogant. I crossed the line ever so slightly with my follow up ?helps, but a ban in situations like that could easily piss people off enough to make them forget about the game. Everyone has always said this since the beginning of time, but having staff members that have no personality and are staff members because they enjoy their "e-power" is a horrible idea. Staff members should be staff because it's fun, not because they get their rocks off on banning people. If TW had a policy that reduced the stupid minigames, you could cut a lot of those staff members loose to find some other game to go ruin.

A relatively unflattering desk-type often whisks himself into the post-adolescent limbo of his youth, spent in discos across America. I had such great fun, he remembers- the razored mirrors, the banana boat heels. He wishes to rekindle the fiery fire, but is disobliged to find how much has changed. Could he remake this karaoke bar into even a semblance of the groovy glitter that seems to have faded only a fortnight previous? No, even with the crusty-fingered blessings of the zoot suit under any forgotten streetcorner could he siege the senses into a comparison of times past. The people have gone and the magic is silent enough to become susceptible to memory's investigation. So he makes his way to the nearest Foot Locker to get a fresh pair of kicks.

Take this stupid USAGE LIMIT off elim. I mean, let ANY new player have the chance to play. Yeah their might be one player ranking a ton of alias names, but WHO CARES? Does anyone seriously care about elim rankings? I doubt it. Especially not at the expense of having elim or TW die...

Take this stupid usage limit off. It's pointless.

Most games have a training phase or a tutorial, or are so easy none is needed. Subspace doesn't fall in the latter category in my opinion.

pps. Why do you think of a tutorial arena where players are "guided" by the pms of a bot who tells them what each ship does and how to operate them in a controlled setting, and has a little exam in chat commands. This would've helped me a great deal when I started at least. Players entering the zone for the first time could be "redirected" to this arena.
i cut most of the bullshit out but this stood out to me and ill tell you why

you probably havent played the game long enough to remember, but the game used to be called subspace (after sniper anyway)

and i forget what version ended it but there used to be an offline tutorial training mode where you could float around in all the ships and test out the controls with a big help screen to tell you what to do

and you could shoot at CPU drones and collect greens, and learn how to use thor and decoy and all those cool things

and it was actually very nice to be able to learn how to basically control your ship OFFLINE so that when you actually DID logon you knew what you were doing

and if you really want to know how to get new players into the game instead of being faggots and all doom and gloom like, and you want it to actually work where the whole community can help.....then put it on a online game voting site and have the community vote the shit out of it, thats how i learned of the game, back on some obscure website MPOGD (multiplayer online games directory) or something, continuum won 1st a few months in a row, and i was like "maybe i should try this game out, it has really good reviews" and it was actually a fun game that you DIDNT have to pay for, which was probably the biggest plus of them all, now that was back in 2000 but 2000 wasnt THAT long ago if you ask me, and it was still WAY past this games actual market value in terms of graphics, so obviously it wasnt the "high-tech" bullshit that got me into the game, it was the gameplay, which kept me playing still to this day

also, on a side note, anyone remember the game infanty? basicly the same game as subspace just used ww3 type graphics and it was pretty fun in itself, but it turned paytoplay and i said screw that, but a fun spinoff of subspace nonetheless, wonder what happened to it
RaCka> imagine standing out as a retard on subspace
                              RaCka> mad impressive

pub, elim, baseelim, maybe a hosted event or two. Private basing later on was fun as the best ppl showed and the games were intense and league-like. Of course the leagues, and that's all that needs to be done pretty much.

?go base today is worse than pub, and all these events only contribute to separating population. 24 hrs event marathon ? Thanks for the effort, but no thanks. UFC ? It came on like once/week and there were no other events to be played so ppl stuck through it.

Pubbing ? I barely remember anything anymore, but things that stuck to the memory were like ownage of Cripples, "oh there is that Ayden-guy freq-switch killing terrs, lets watch", some Elusive, or Siege name "warming up" in the pub, having 10 ppl duelling him while holding 100+ bty, "I was LTing today but some newbie named NightCrawler (or was it NCrawler) sucked hard in terr" - then you notice the good ppl being in squads, then you ask to join, they send you around few turns, then they tell you you have to get good, then you realise "in order to move from pub to league I have to prac - prac what - there were elim and baseelim (same map) - prac that!" and bam! you have 100+ ppl in elim arena(s)

Drop the events, make them mean something like before, 1 pure pub (wtf is this shit anyway, levs own) rest normal pubs, have ?go base games being hosted by bot once per hour, make stats work for (b)elim, have bot host wb/javduel few times/day
