Removal of Pure Publics - An end of an Era
My goal, since I was made Staff 5 years ago, was to improve Trench Wars, and more specifically Publics. When I first became <ER>, all I did was host manual base events and start working on Public basing without Leviathans. Obviously my view is subjective, and I thought it was a good idea to bring basing without Leviathans into Publics, to popularise basing. A few years down the line, I am still in Staff, and in a position to do more than what I could before. My job is very hard. There are so many views and opinions on what Publics should be. It's hard to please everyone, therefore you have to please the majority and hope the rest eventually fall in love with the decision you made. Sometimes, you have to make decisions that players don't like, for the betterment of the zone.
A lot of players like Pure Publics, but I believe removing them would benefit the zone, and my reasoning is below.
But why?
I've seen quite a few players complain about Pure Publics, so I had a thought about their effect on the rest of Publics. It's true, they do remove gameplay from other Public arenas, effectively killing them. This wasn't my intentions when I first created Pure Publics, then again, I was probably quite naïve as a young Staffer, hoping to change the World and all!
The problem with this zone, is that it never had an objective or goal. What is Trench Wars? Who really knows? Is it basing? Is it dueling? You could say it was dueling because our very first leagues were dueling. But, what is this base doing in the middle of map, with a flag? Huh? There was never a statement saying what the hell we do here in Trench Wars until THE PUSHER created an 'about us' link on the main site. If you entered the game straight away, there would be nothing to suggest what you do. Regardless of what kind of gameplay we have here in Trench Wars, it will always require team play.
And an emphasis of team play is what I want to create in Publics
New Focus
I think we should focus on teamplay. Whether it be players duking it out in the spawn area, of a team trying to get rid of that harassing LeviTerr, it involves teamplay. Players helping each other to beat the other team. This is what I am proposing;
1) Leviathans are enabled in all arenas
2) We make private frequencies harder to gain. You have to have xxxx amount of points before being allowed to go on a private frequency. Something along those lines. This would be implemented soon...
LeviTerrs would be more welcomed if they were on a main Public frequency, helping a team attack/defend the base. I don't want to completely eliminate private frequencies because players do like to sometimes duel against everyone, or what have you.
I think players should be allowed to do what they want in Publics. The plus side to removing Pure Publics is that if one Public isn't basing/dueling, they can go to the next one. We don't have to emphasise one arena for each of these gameplays.
Since there will be no more Pure Publics, we could promote basing in other ways that doesn't negatively and directly affect Publics. Pure Basing Weekends every so often, more hosted Base Maps, Weekend Events that involve big Base Maps. Things that still involve newer players with basing, but not destroy publics.
Below are a few advantages and disadvantages for removing Pure Publics. You're free to add some more if you like.
Advantages of removing Pure Publics
1) Consistnecy across the board - gameplay isn't drawn for other arenas.
2) All types of gameplay across all arenas. If you don't like what you see in one arena, there's always a different one to check out.
3) Encourages teamwork with all ships. Regardless of what you do, you can still have plenty of fun working together in teams.
4) Less automation – We have a bot telling us that keep the flag for so long wins you the game. I don't think it's necessary really, as you would think that's what capturing the flag is all about. Again, this was never fully explained by Zone Staff before.
Disadvantages of removing Pure Publics
1) Lessens competitive play - Veterans will never come back. To be honest, I don't think Veterans will come back to Publics. Why should we destroy Publics for those who aren't so much into competitive play in a hope to get those 'Veterans' back?
2) Reduces basing in some arenas
3) Backlash from players – Players in Pure Publics are quite intolerant of Leviathans, but I think the newer generation of players need to be shown by 'Veteran Pubbers' (not to be confused by any other 'Veteran') on how to defend flag with Leviathans around.
This is quite a big change, and I think it is for the betterment of the zone. Your feedback and comments are welcome of course.
