Rofl. Did you seriously believe that i thoguht that we would get 10.000 players like they said? You're kidding me.Originally posted by Dabram View PostUmh, some semi-legal sharing website wants to buy the rights to an ancient game, promises to boost the playerbase to 100.000 while keeping it free2play. That's what I get from those poorly written emails.
Not only would they never reach the 100.000 mark, they'd actually lose money if they keep it free2play.
More likely: they make it pay2play, maybe make a couple of bucks out of it, then everyone leaves.
The charm of this game isn't just the (almost perfect) gameplay and that it's free, there's many games alike, but mostly that it's community-based and has grown it's own history. Which is also why ALL replicas have failed miserably.
My guess is they probably noticed to have any success, they'd need to win the players.. so they decided to target Polix.. I'm pretty sure Priitk (or w/e owns the rights) just ignored them, rightfully. Glad we did the same.
Soilderz you're even more naive than Might. <_<
Sure the charm of this game is as you said, But if you think this game will survive for years to come then you're more naive than me.
I NEVER said that I belived anything said in that email. I just said this game is dying as we speak. But yeah, I don't care, let's just sit and watch it die instead.
Not like we have any other options!

twsites is not the same server as the game host...
twsites used to host trenchwars.org for free as DocK> owns/owned this webhosting server...
We have our own server for web & bots (owned by PL) now and administered by DocK>
:fear:

Wait - does this service run off of our server?Originally posted by Stabwound View Posttwsites.com has no connection to Trench Wars at all and hasn't for a long time. DoCk> (assuming he still runs it) pockets 100% of the profits from it.
Down with this sort of thing!

this 100%Originally posted by Stabwound View PostThe troubling thing about this whole RapidShare thing is that they're very vague with their intentions. They say they want the game to remain free, but that sounds like BS to me. What the hell is the point in taking over an online game, spending tons of money on legal fees, server costs and development costs, and then not trying to make money from it? How much do you want to bet they'd end up requiring a paid RapidShare account to play the game? Subspace failed as a commercial game 10 years ago, and what would be the difference now?
Also, I'm willing to bet that if they somehow DID get legal ownership of Subspace, they're probably attempt to shutdown SSC/Continuum as we know it. Everything would probably have to run from their servers.
I got to watch Infantry/Cosmic Rift be ruined by Sony after they took the games over from Harmless and started charging a monthly fee and incorporated it into the annoying Station system. The games were pretty much ruined, populations dropped, and it was just a disaster. If this Continuum/RapidShare thing actually went through, it would probably be the end of the game.
Anyway, this is probably all completely moot as I doubt they'll ever get a response from PriitK anyway.
and I agree with bram soldierz is pretty dumb

I think Reaver makes a good point regarding the independence of the game.Originally posted by Reaver View Postcontinuum as we know it now (independent) will most likely exist whether this happens or not, the only thing that might change is whether people go over to this other version or not, but I'm certain that regardless some will stay here unless they manage to clone continuum exactly as it is and it's entirely free, the odds of that happening aren't likely.
Since the current server software and client will still exist regardless of whether RapidShare gets involved ("takes over"), means that this is really only a very low-risk proposition, so we basically don't have much to lose... and potentially we could have much to gain through publicity or advertising. And if thinks go wrong (i.e. pay2play) or we aren't satisfied with what RapidShare does, we could always fall back to the current server/client software and bring back the new population with us that RapidShare's clone generated.

another quick thought - if the CEO loves SS so much, why don't we simply ask him to advert the game and its websites on Rapidshare instead of trying to acquire it?
Also in terms of profitting off of this game, isn't that what twsites.com is doing? Or does that go 100% toward service costs so in that sense it's fine?

So,
Where are we standing atm? Are we still in contact with rapidshare?

It could conceivably make money for them even as a free game if it just got people to their site where they could sell ad space and/or draw a certain percentage of people into other things. Gateway drug analogy.
