  • TWDT vs TWL

I'm creating this thread to have an open discussion of TWDT vs TWL. Recently TWDT is without a doubt much better for zone activity and inclusivity compared to TWL. Originally TWL was scheduled to take place some time after this TWDT season ended but as this season comes to an end an overwhelming amount of players have personally reached out to me expressing they would prefer to have another TWDT versus having a TWL season.

I personally am not opposed to either taking place as the next league but would really love as much community feedback as possible on this topic. Thanks!

I am not a fan of TWL personally so, I vote for DT!

The star capped TWL sort of league riverside is suggesting could be an interesting middle ground between the two.

Whatever we do we should still make sure we can schedule a TWL at some point this year to keep that yearly event going.

I would personally prefer a TWL season with some minor changes to the league format.

        - very short regular season. ideally three weeks long, but should we have several teams might need to be four weeks long.

        - to change it up we could experiment with a format in dueling leagues where you play the same team twice back to back. 2-0 would give three points, 1-1 would give one point and 0-2 would give no points. this also prepares teams better for playoffs as an added bonus.

        - separate rosters for basing and dueling leagues.

        - stricter roster limits for top teams. there could alternatively be a salary cap of sorts to allow mid-tier squads have more depth as there are only a limited amount of players who can play multiple leagues while limiting stacking for top teams.

        - four team playoffs so its only two extra weeks. I wouldn't be opposed to having 4th and 5th seed face one another to determine last team to qualify for playoffs, but that might be a scheduling nightmare.

however should we opt with another TWDT season we might want to try something different this time around to spice it up.

This is a good idea. Probably the best idea really to mix the two up.

I voted TWL but I'm honestly split on it. The issue with TWL has always been stacked teams making things so top heavy that only 10% of the game really gets to play in fun/meaningful games by the end of the season, and most of the games for everyone are unfun because they're just stomps one way or the other. I know some weeks the top teams in each league are playing the bottom feeders and most people don't even want to show for that on either side. By the end of TWL, the game is just dead and everyone is burnt out. TWDT feels a bit different for whatever reason that may be.

To be honest, TWDT is probably the best for the game as a whole. There needs to be something different in it though. I don't know what that might be, but spicing things up a bit is probably needed if you do a league again so soon, and that's probably necessary to keep the hype going.

As someone who came back from a long absence, TWDT was a breath of fresh air compared to my memories of TWL. I'm in favor of another TWDT run instead of TWL. From what I'm seeing I'm not sure there are enough players for a deep TWL league, I kind of think it'd be more interesting to convert TWL to a tournament format rather than overextend the player base/squads. Or run a spinoff of TWDT after a season and draft top players from prior season into a smaller pool tournament of "elite" players. Just trying to think of something that allows for higher level play that also doesn't become a slog/hurt activity in the community.

If it's TWDT I'll play, if it's TWL I'll take a break. Not really that bothered either way.

I think a short twl is the play. We cant have 4 twdt seasons in one year it would get stale. Dt is going to win any public vote. Twl May-June, DT July-Aug. Twl in the summer months is a death sentence

If we do another DT season it should probably be catered to middle rated players (call it Amateur Draft Tournament) with strict limits for high star slots or alternatively no cap with less teams to be more competitive.

or we could simply take a break from team leagues and do some minor ones like event tournaments, racing cups, basing/dueling cups and so on.

                      My vote remains for TWL.

I voted other but more or less agree a short TWL should be next.

I think there has to be some down-time before another DT is run (even if just 6-8 weeks). Originally I was going to suggest a sort-of "All-Star Invitational" where the top X players according to X metric are invited to participate. Then I would concurrently run a for-shits-and-giggles league at the same time. That could be maybe baseduel, or multi-freq warzone, or a random base map basing cup (tons of good and bad alternative basing arenas). You could either run it on Saturdays so people could watch the vets Sundays, or at the same time on Sundays so people have something to do.

This would build hype for the top 5% of players that TWL caters to while giving everyone else something fun to do in the "off season" of what has arguably become Trench Wars' main league (TWDT).

Or you could just do a short TWL by doing TWD-qualifiers for an 8-team playoff.

I don't feel strongly either way.

I think 2 TWDTs, 1 TWL, and 1 Other is the perfect mix every season. 3 TWDTs feels like too much, and no TWL in a calendar year would be a disaster.

TWDT is the main league of this zone, the most inclusive, and the most fun. I have been in the TWDT > TWL camp forever (I'm member #001), although I dislike the star cap.

TWDT is just a great league to run in September/October and get people back after summer break, and begin a strong winter push. If you run TWDT again, you're basically committing to 3 TWDTs like 2019. That seems too much to me, but if that's what people want, whatever, it's fine.

TWL has to be run at some point. There is a group of veterans core to this zone who do not care about TWDT and never will, and they tolerate (and sometimes play) TWDT to pass the time and prep for TWL. Players also deserve the chance to prove themselves against the best competition, and to play with their friends.

A lot of the best players in the zone who are really important to the success of TWDT want and need TWL. They get sick and complain about TWDT and the format and playing with low-star players.

They will quit if you don't run TWL in 2022.

TWL is, and always will be, the premier league of this zone. It is the standard by which elite players compare each others to. But, most importantly, IT'S GOOD FOR TWDT. All those 9* and 10* players who form the nucleus of every TWDT and that other players in the zone want to play with and against, need 1 TWL a year AND because they genuinely want to play with their friends instead of being drafted and playing with randoms.

TWL and TWDT form a symbiotic relationship and need each other.

Even if you only care about TWDT, TWL is a beneficial and crucial element and you just have to pull it off fast like a band-aid. A very short TWL season like 2020 (and NOT like 2021) is just something that has to happen. As to when it happens, I think either May or November. Either make it the next league, or run it November/December after the September/October TWDT.

Do not allow anyone who wants in to TWL in to TWL, you are shooting yourself, the season, the zone and the players in the foot.

Talent is going to pool. To avoid a repeat of last season there needs to be some kind of cutoff or qualifier.

It's going to suck for 1/2 (maybe more, maybe less, I don't know) the zone to not make the cut for a league, but if you want to have a fun season, you need to do it. There is no reason to allow a team into a league when you expect them to go 2-10 for the season.

I say this with every intention of taking a break during TWL (or maybe playing the side thing if there is one). I was on the worst squad last TWL, we shouldn't of been there and we made the league worse for it. And that's no disrespect to any of my Juice squaddies (4 of which just played in DTB finals). It's just what happens when squadding becomes an arms race.
