  • Election Thread #1 -real version (Let's see how long we can stay on topic)

    By the way, this is not, I repeat is NOT a copied version from any other thread on the General Discussion forum that was closed by Cylor because it was off topic. This is nothing buy original, because there wasn't REALLY a thread before this that went off topic and was closed.

    Nov. 2 is already upon those of us posting from Europe, so I figured it was about time this thread started up.

    For those of you who are voting: feel free to tell us when, where, how, and who you voted (for), though of course you aren't obliged to tell us.

    I'm particularly interested in Dameon Angell's response to this (though you shouldn't feel pressured, Dameon), since he was our only real "undecided voter" in all of our forum discussions over the last few months over the once-forthcoming and now upon us election.

    For those of us who aren't voting, this is a good place to keep tabs on how the election is progressing. Post whatever you've heard, or results in different states- not all of us get a chance to watch the news, especially from school, but we all have access to these forums, so we might as well keep track of how things are progressing here.

    This is NOT the thread to:
    - talk about how much you hate Bush;
    - talk about how much you hate Kerry;
    - talk about how much you hate the electoral college.

    This is a facts-oriented thread so we can talk about what's happening in the election. You can discuss the campaigns, if you wish, in terms of how different tactics did or didn't pay off in the final voting tally. Additionally, if there's a controversy or something (which is extremely likely, and there've been several election-related controversies in terms of ballot construction and loss, as well as voter rejection, already), we can definitely discuss it here, but I'd like to avoid finger-pointing and general retardation as much as I can.

    Both my parents are voting Democrat, CT is pretty much locked up going to Kerry.

    Bush has a strong hold in The Central States, but lacks current support in the New England and West Coast, where the most Electoral Votes are.

    If Kerry can pull off Ohio, Florida and maybe Penn., which is very plausible, he will win in 2004, but Bush still has a great chance if he wins ONE out of the three.

    It is really too close to call.

      I'm sure you guys have heard this, but before every election the Washington Redskins and the Green Bay Packers play eachother. Supposedly, if the Redskins win, then the president is re-elected and so far it's been right some sixteen times if I remember right. The Redskins lost this past weekend, so presumably Kerry should win. But this is only superstition, of course.

      P.S. Be weary, Jerome.

                        I'd like to see a forum dedicated to politics.

                          How far to the left, enough to vote for Nader or just enough to go for the Democrats?

                          Seriously though, let's keep this one from the usual randomness that passes for wit on these forums.

                          Here's an idea: can someone produce a map for us with the states coloured, just like the telecasts do? I think a lot of us here might find a visual aid helpful.

                          And here's a question for people: everyone's probably heard of Osama Bin Laden's recent message. It's clear it was not a coincidence that it came so close to the election. How do you think it may affect how people vote? Will it scare voters and make them lean towards Bush, or do you think it will remind people that Bush has still not managed to catch Bin Laden? And regardless of how it will affect voters, how do you think he wanted it to affect voters?

                            Kolar was showing me earlier, let me take a look.

                            If Osama Bin Laden said don't vote for Bush people would start voting for Bush, the best thing Osama Bin Laden could have done is make it clear that he is still free and that they never really caught him - killed him. Bush failed doing his job and bringing everyone responsible for 911 to justice. It may start with your fists but it must end with your mind.

                              N.H. Cast Nation's 1st Election Day Votes

                              1 hour, 19 minutes ago

                              By JIM COLE, Associated Press Writer

                              HART'S LOCATION, N.H. - The nation's first Election Day votes were cast and counted just after midnight Tuesday in this mountain hamlet, with President Bush and John Kerry each receiving 15 votes. Ralph Nader received one.

                              The communities of Hart's Location and Dixville Notch since 1948 sporadically have been taking advantage of a state law that allows communities to close polls early if all registered voters have cast ballots. The 26 registered voters in Dixville Notch were still were casting votes shortly after midnight.

                              In 2000, both communities chose President Bush over Democrat Al Gore. In Hart's Location, Bush won 17-13. In Dixville Notch, about 50 miles to the north, Bush had 21, Gore five and Ralph Nader one vote.

                              By state law, polls must be open between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. But nothing prevents a town from opening the polls earlier and closing after all potential voters have cast ballots.
