The reason why the 24-week arguement is there is because medical science cannot keep a premature baby alive before then as by 24 weeks the lungs still haven't developed and we don't know how to make artificial lungs for premature infants yet.

Either way I'm pro choice for sure, women should have a choice over their own bodies. An unborn baby is just that... unborn.

does that mean that if a baby was born prematurely, and a foetus which was just as developed but not yet born, that the unborn foetus has less of a right to live than the baby that is born? you could say that the foetus is dependant on the mother, but then again the baby is dependant on other people to take care of it.

Philosophically I don't believe an unborn child is the same as one which is out of the womb, that's what I personally believe in. To answer your specific question, a fetus inside the mother is completely dependent on the mother to the point of being an extension of the mother herself (i.e. her arm). Once this fetus is taken out of the mother and other things are keeping it alive, then the mother has no right to abort the child as it is no longer PART of her. That would be murder. Because the child is literally PART of the mother, then the mother should be allowed to have sovereignty over her own person as much as she should have the right to any other medical procedure on herself.

In fact in the United States, Roe vs. Wade centered upon the right of doctors to perform medical procedures they felt was necessary (excellent article in the New York Times Magazine a few months ago: http://www.wfu.edu/~chesner/bc-conla...%20Justice.htm ), while in Canada the debate was on the Charter of Rights and Freedoms section 7 ("Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the person and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice").

good points. thanks for answering. I asked because that was one of the arguments our ethics teacher put forward for us to discuss a while ago; I was wondering what comebacks could be made to it

I'm pro-choice, and my reasoning is sorta simple.

If the fetus were to be taken out of the mother, it would die immediately, therefore it could not live on it's own.....at all.

But the mother could continue living if the baby were removed, therefore I believe it is up to the mother, the living being, to decide what's best.

I don't think any mother should be forced to have a child if she doesn't want to, so I'm pro-choice. Although I think adoption is always a better option than death, I don't think other people have the right to choose for a girl/woman.

it doesnt matter what the others think. some people are to stupid to realize whats right and whats wrong.

This is as much as an issue as cutting your hair or planting certain crops together was in biblical times, and many years hence it will be looked upon as just as silly as we do at those strange issues of the past that shouldnt even be issues
