keep in mind that roosevelt was 12 years, truman 8, lbj+kennedy 8. that's 26 of the next 34 years that had a democrat in the presidency

this is just shorthand obviously since the president doesnt reflect everything that goes on- but it does move in cycles, you can and do have one dominant party for long stretches of time in u.s. politics.

Well my point is that with a 2-party system, it's hard to say whether people vote for the other party because:
1) Political views
2) Tired of having only 1 party in charge, want to try another party, but since there's only 1 other party they win even if political views don't really match up.

I think there's more than enough people in the centre (all those people who call themselves 'independents') such that if a centrist party were to be created which threw out all of the socially conservative aspects of the Republicans but put in much more fiscally conservative views than the Democrats, it would be a winner. Unfortunately because both parties are so big, they end up catering a lot to their fringes and the centre loses out.
