The thing that worries me most is the scant regard for going through the proper channels the powerful countries like USA and Russia are showing

There was no weapons of mass destruction, yet USA does a full scale invasion of Iraq overthrowing the government

Georgia attacked separatists and Russia invades… and attacks a city beyond the separatist region


It is probable that these two breakaway regions will either annex to Russia or have autonomous rule backed by Russia – either result will weaken Georgia. Under the terms of the russian ceasefore the two regions will vote whether to join russia and georgian troops are no longer allowed there.

It was disproportionate force that Russia used, I’ve no doubt about that and it also fits in with the strong military image harking back to the cold war that Russia is actively trying to portray to the world.

You know cops, on a nearly daily basis I have to log on to the forums and see your canadian liberalism bullshit, so I think it is time for you to understand the truth of the matter. How can a country with zero gold medals in the Olympics truly understand whether or whether not America can stop Russia from trying to reclaim all of its lost territory such as Ukraine should the need arise? I am fairly certain a country of pussies, who expect the government to give them everything they need, and a country who much like the French, appears to rather roll over and die than come to a tough decision, have bred a player who thinks he even for one second understands why America is the best country in the world. You can't even fathom what America can do when it needs to be done, should we start our war machine rolling again, there is not a country on earth, be it China or Russia, that could take the full might of America head on. In the macro-scopic view, yes, the end of all major offensives. All that's left is the diplomatic and minor scuffles to deal with. Small skirmishes will ensue for a few more months, but nothing major worth noting.

no you're wrong. this is not a black and white issue. Russia has many motives for invading and continually pressing farther into Georgia. The oil pipeline connecting to Iran is certainly an incentive for Russia as is sending a message to the world about Russia's reemergence, as is testing their military capabilities to match their large economic investment in the defense industry, as is striking back at Georgia. Russia is trying to accomplish many things just as the US had many reasons for the war in Iraq (public "patriotism" in response to 9/11, removing Hussein, finding wmds (?), increasing the defense industry, etc. etc.).

There is nothing wrong. As I already said, Oil might be involved in this, but clearly its not the reason.
I also feel a bit hypocrisy from U.S after they invaded Iraq and Afghanistan.

Russia is also pissed about the agreement that was in Kosovo, leaded by the west. So yes, there are many things involved, but the conflict there is for the reason I mentioned above.

No. This conflict is about South Ossetie wanting to be independent from Georgia and Georgia not letting them be independent. The reason WHY Georgia doesnt want South Ossetie to be independent is because of the oil, and also gas I believe. If South Ossetie didn't have all these resources it could be very likely that Georgia would have agreed to its independence. Saakashvilli already offered South Ossetie a lot of sovereignty, but doesnt want it to part from Georgia because of the oil and other resources. So it is not a minor reason, it is THE reason for the fights between rebels and Georgian army.

Medfedev said earlier today that Georgia had been punished enough and that Russia would cease the fighting, but it has been reported after that 3 cities were still under attack, during one of these attacks a Dutch cameraman died and a Dutch reporter was injured.
