but since US can't do anything since we won't start a war with Russia, no one else will either, EU would be the only option there, since russia is Eastern Europe at least, but since you cannot take care of your own continent well i guess countries like Georgia will have to suck it up and get attacked

Russia does want to back the separatist right now with force but they also want to justify billions spent on modernizing their military, given that it is the first time since the 90s they've left for foreign soil. They're looking to do as much as they can while the world is still focused on the Olympics starting up.

Russia wants a confrontation so it is for the best the West doesn't provide anything more then their backing in name only.

They don't want confrontation, but rather they see that the US lost it's diplomatic bite with our forces squandered in Iraq/Afghanistan. They're basically making the most of the moment to help a Georgian separatist group, favorable to Russia succeed and possibly be annexed to it.
