The power of lag is not to be underestimated. IMO that's the thing that separates the truly greatest players from the above-average "good" players.

Huh? Is that link supposed to be for my benefit?

My point isn't to tell you to use a new word- I'm bringing up related ideas that have already been developed. If you're thinking about skill, talent, and confidence you should consider what has already been researched. Flow is very much related to challenge, competition, and creativity.

Those dictionary definitions of confidence don't mention ability, talent, skill. They don't mention laid-back and collected either ("aplomb" or "poise" are better words for that).

You're talking about something that can theoretically be measured so it is either more specific or different that the "dictionary definition". For example, the word "over-confidence" doesn't make sense in your definition because your "true sense of confidence" is linear, and more is better- there's no such thing as having too much.

I don't have a problem with refining or redefining words- evolving concepts require either new words or redefining the words we have.

          con·fi·dence ( P ) Pronunciation Key (knf-dns)
          n.

          1. Trust or faith in a person or thing.
          4. A feeling of assurance, especially of self-assurance.
          5. The state or quality of being certain.

Granted the reasoning capabilities you appear to demonstrate, I give you enough credit to believe that you can simply deduce which confidence terminology I am trying to use out of those provided in the dictionary, though I accept your deviations from that, deviations through which you apparently wish to emphasize your conflicting views.

confidence is huge in wb. how many times does someone get strayed a couple of times, start out an LD at 0-2, and then bounce back to a dominating round....hardly ever.

hmm you guys make good points. I think another big part of playing is based on intimidation. That's why I feel keeping calm and collected is key. When you see a huge laggot and you wonder how they aren't lagging out and you think to yourself "oh man i bet that laggot is gonna kill me without me even seeing his bullet" then you started to get scared and intimidated. This affects your performance, and ironically, more often than not that laggot will kill you. It's the same thing when you see good players or vets. Some people will go "oh no he's good, maybe I should stay away from him... or maybe I'll rush him..." and it often causes indecision in the player, which eventually leads to the player messing up. It's even worse with laggy vets. But anways, that's why I must be cool and calm when I go up against a good squad. I know I will be playing good players, so skill alone might not help me. I will have to outwit them also, with teaming, catching them off guard, not being intimidated, and maybe even intimidating them. I don't know about some of those crazy vets out there and what they think about, but I know when I get into match against a good squad, all I'm thinking about is being calm, and focussed. I don't worry about the rushing, or my aim, etc. That all just seems to come naturally. Oh and the other thing I think about while starting is starting positive. Because for some reason when i start negative, 80% of the time it just goes downhill from there.

This is very interesting, because I was looking for a way to explain, how someone (say me) who has been playing this game for years, and is somewhat talented at it, can still play horribly even if he tries after all this time practicing.
I guess most of it can be blamed on the one-hit-kill system of TW, let's face it, every moron with a finger can press the ctrl button o_O
but there's something else, it's weird how when I was at my top ability I wasn't even trying that hard, it just all came naturally and very easily, every shot i made would kill someone, I knew exactly where my opponent is going, and exactly when a shot was coming and how to dodge it.

There are times in the game, I feel like I can kill anyone, and there are times that even if I try to use everything I learned about this game I still can't get over a 7-10 in elim. To me that is the essence of frustration about TW.

It's interesting to see an awesome elimer do absolutely horrible in a game like UFC where they are only give one life. Perhaps in situations like UFC it's not always best to be relaxed?
