I said people that bitch about how much money the military makes must have no idea how little the average soldier DOES make. Especially with the amount of hours they put in, you would think they would make more... but no, there is no overtime in the military.

For your information, my father was in the Air Force for 20 years, away from me for months or even years at a time (during Desert Storm). His last mission was to Afghanistan in 2002. Don't give that bullshit about not understanding military life, I was raised in the middle of it. My father and a hell of a lot of other good men go to places like Iraq because they were ordered to and it's their job, not necessarily because they agree with the decisions made by people higher up on the food chain.

I'm not going to turn this into an Iraq debate, but I think Al Gore said it best:

"... Saddam Hussein was not the one responsible for the attack on 9/11. Maybe we shouldn't have withdrawn most of our troops from the surge in Afghanistan, where Osama bin Laden was and invade a country that didn't attack us."

Yes, it never came to your mind that with some of the modern weapons, your army is rendered useless. The United States of America don't need an army anymore. They can strike back like no other country -or like any other country- when a line is crossed. No country will ever attack a peaceful United States, even if they could manage an invasion logistically. So your survival instinct, which is not only primal an barbaric, is also misplaced.

What's left is warmongering, just for the sake of it. Because you have an army to harbor the weak minded, to pay for this you send them away on plundering missions. How is that going to make your country safer? It isn't going to make your country safer. You just increase the amount of radicals because you expose more people to war and the loss that comes from it.
Allied countries are less likely to breed radicals than enemy states, especially when you treat them with respect.

let me put it this way... the United States has the largest Navy in the world. The navy does a LOT of things other than fight wars, but lets not forget about the Cold War between USA and USSR. Without an army, do you honestly think half of Europe would be free of communism? The US Navy submarines did more in that little power struggle than you would EVER know.

Also, who do you think controls our nuclear arms? No one would attack us without an army you say, because we have nuclear weapons right? Who do you think maintains those weapons? How do you think we have so much political clout in telling country's like Iran that they need to cease making nuclear weapons? Or telling North Korea to stop shooting missiles at Japan?

I'll put it in simple terms for you. Do you know what nuclear deterence is? The US has ICBM submarines that contain warheads. The primary use of these submarines are to stop a nuclear war from ever happening, by being strategically placed around the world.

Now, if we had no military, who would drive these submarines?

Also, how do you think the UN was created? By the USA. Who do you think funds more than 80% of the UN? The USA. Why do you think the UN is even effective? The USA backs them.

I guess my point, which I might not have stated outright, was that going into the military is a choice for some people ('I want to serve my country!' etc), whereas for others it's the only realistic job opportunity that might offer them a future beyond 7-11 or McDonald's. Some people, like my father, recognized that and I'd say I grew up in a pretty good home because of it.

Those who are, to say, "stuck" with the military as their career may not necessarily agree with the policies of those in power but are again "stuck" with cleaning up the mess (Lebanon, Iraq, etc). It sounds to me, however, that Izor is not in that camp, and prefers waving the flag and bolstering his president and job title. If it was a choice for him, as I suspect it was, to valiantly "serve his country" then all I can say is good for him, and hopefully he believes in the cause in Iraq, even though I and apparently a majority of other Americans do not.

The UN isnt important, because no one has any fear of what will happen if they dont adhere to UN laws. Looking back at my posts, thats exactly what I've said the whole time. And as a kicker, even if the UN wanted to punish the US, we could always cut our funding for it and it would go away, unless the rest of the world wants to actually contribute money to such a useless body.

You say that no one would invade a peaceful United States, but not too long ago Germany was invading many peaceful European countries. Perhaps you dont understand human nature? Or maybe you'll just rely on us to bail you out again when someone invades you. Thats what separates our countries. Our citizens dont claim internet addiction to get out of military service. We're willing to do whats necessary to make our world a better place, and we really dont care what the rest of the world thinks about it, because in the end all they're doing is whining at us to stop.

First, we don't have military service. I see what you tried to do in your arguments, but in the end you are just showing that your mindset is the same as that of the leaders of Germany in the forties. The problem is, there was an agreement back then, that they broke. Noone could hold them to the agreement, but that doesn't mean they should break it.
You say that the US created the UN, that's probably the reason why it fails then..
