As for Bush being a moron, sorry guys he isn't. No matter what you say, he needs some sort of intellect to be able to get where he is. Even if you're a comnplete tool, you need some ability to be able to stand in front of a large crowd and speak, remember people's names (he seems to know every reporter during press conferences), be able to get people to vote for you, make millions off a baseball team, and so on. He may make stupid choices, but I guarantee you his IQ is above 100.

As for the Bible... as far as historians know (and as far as common sense will tell you) the Bible was written many years after the events which it depicts took place. The best archelogical evidence puts the writing of the Old Testament in the form of the Torah in around 700-600 BC during the time when the Jews were captives in Babylon. As for the New Testament, considering a bunch of the important people in it die to captivity/Romans obviously these were not first hand accounts. In fact they were likely written many years later.

Now hardcore Christians (i.e. my housemate) will tell you that if you compare other texts and other evidence you'll see an amazing similarity in the texts which would be impossible if someone just 'made it up'. Furthermore even more hardcore people (i.e. those crazy guys in the Middle Ages and maybe Pandagirl) probably believed that the Bible is exactly right in every way because even if it was written long after, the power of God directed the people who wrote the thing to make it perfect.

Now for the common sense.

1) The bible wasn't written in whatever language anyone on this board grew up with. It's been translated and revised over the years.
2) If people can get TRENCH WARS facts wrong about things that only happened a FEW YEARS AGO where these same people were PARTICIPANTS OF imagine how wrong things could get if it were recorded by NON-PARTICIPANTS, DECADES LATER, who were probably superstitious uneducated peasents, or at the very least people who added their own interpretations or embellishments of what happened.

That's where the people now who say 'don't look at the literal, look at the message' come from.

Are they right? I dunno. But hell I'm no Christian neither have thousands of generations of my ancestors been, and I doubt they're burning in hell or some level of Purgatory cause they never knew or cared about what some people in the Middle East did.

voting republican is in my self interest becuase
a) i will continually be heading up the tax bracket. Unlike many people who decide on worthless degrees (i.e. anything from the liberal arts college), i have a good degree and will be making good money
b)I dont agree with the popular democratic belief that everyone should be taken care of by the govt. I think they should get off their asses and work for it.
c) I do not agree with abortions especially partial birth ones.
d) i dont care about nipples on tv, if they are on there or not it doesnt bother me. The govt can do whatever they want regarding that. I am old enough to get my own porn when i need it
e)my wife and i both own suvs, whats your point? Last i checked i can't move a bed, desk, table, 6 chairs, 2 computers, 2x4s, treadmill, couches and on and on in a camry or metro or some mini euro mobile
f)i dont work in a chem plant, I make beverages aseptically. Anything can be poisonous-it's the dosage that matters.
g)if I don't agree with abortion why would i agree with killing babies for the stem cell reserach? Only way i agree with the research is if the fetus is dead by other means than abortion.

You should really learn how to see each person as a person with their own beliefs. in fact a lot of you should take a second look at how you approach all of this political business. You get too busy seeing parties, and lines that you miss the people and how each person has a differrent background, history, point of view. And just becuase they come to a different conclusion does not make them anyworse than anyone else.

All those points you responded to there, harken back to bloodzombie's post, and he wasn't telling you that you should shut up, or that you couldn't have your wrong-headed beliefs. i think he was just more poking fun at well, possibly you since you started this thread, for being so wrong-headed. He also didn't profess to be either liberal or a democrat, that I recall. Who's making assumptions now?

Secondly, people that disagree kind of have to think of one or the other bit as wrong... hence... "disagree" as opposed to "agree".

First off, my computer science degree would like to give your whole "anything from a liberal arts college" argument a hearty "eat a dick." Sure, everyone isn't studying to be a lawyer or a doctor, but think about it--it would definitely suck if everyone was. Society needs people filling all kinds of roles to make the greater whole better, not just white-collar workers.

See above. I don't think that it's about people being lazy and not wanting to work, it's about equal treatment for all sectors of the working class, not just white collar. Hell, I'm white collar and I can see that. Do you want to obtain your own water? How about dispose of your own waste? (Oh, and when I say "dispose of your own waste", I don't mean "dump it into the river" like your Republican brethren seem to think is okay.)

That's fine. You don't have to have one. However, give people who are in a bad situation the right to choose. There are extenuating circumstances that a lot of people miss in the whole abortion issue. I'm not a woman and neither are you, so let's cut the crap and let people be adults and make their own decisions.

Are you moving around a ton of stuff every day? Chances are, probably not. Euros have it right here, folks. We Americans are desperately dependent on having our own cars, and when it comes right down to it, there are very few of us that really need an SUV for daily activities. Need to move some large stuff around occasionally? Rent a car. In the long run, it's probably less expensive to do it that way anyways. Shit, even Republicans can do the math on that one.

I don't think anyone's saying we should be killing babies. Stem cell research could open up doors to a lot of medical breakthroughs, while turning a blind eye to the opportunity is just plain dumb. Think about it, let's be a little intelligent about this and at least try to make things better before slamming your Bible down on top of it. I don't want to make this a religious debate (since those are fruitless--you're gonna believe what you want and I'm going to believe what I want. Neither of us can prove shit.), but goddamn, human life isn't so incredibly precious that we can't take something that's already dead and use it to help the living.

So his family finances his new oil company, which fails and gets bailed out by another oil company, which fails and gets bought out by another oil company called Harken. harken fails miserably and declares that they're down about 23 million dollars... but "luckily" (read: shady as hell) Bush sold his shares the previous month. And that money he used to buy 1.8% of the texas rangers... he was then GIVEN another 10% because he brought an element of celebrity which created interest in the franchise.

yeah, you gotta be a real genius.

Did I say he's a genius? I just said he's not as <100 IQ completely a moron as people make him out to be. People who really are as stupid as people say Bush is aren't able to sound reasonably normal speaking in front of a large crowd, scripted or not. There are also more than enough articles I've read from reporters who've met the man who say that he's much smarter than his media image that I'll believe them, especially since many of these were left-wing people who were writing articles against Bush.

The intrinsic problem with Bush is that since Democrats (and other left-leaning people) are so apt to point out his stupidity, right-leaning people who think any of his policies are good think you are saying they're stupid too, thus increasing the amount of polarization in American politics. Honestly do you think Bush who went to prestigous East coast schools, who spent every summer of his childhood in the East coast is really as country bumpkin as he appears to be, or maybe that's just an image projected so that people will vote for him (and people who won't vote for him anyway are made to attack the person and not the policy thus strengthening the convictions of those who did vote for him)?

Is he a genius? Well people thought Clinton was a moron (especially Republicans) and hell the man's a Rhodes scholar, and was a law professor in his 30s. Now I'm not saying Bush is anywhere near as smart as Clinton (then again how smart is a man who would cheat on his wife with MONICA LEWINSKY of all people when he could get much more attractive women as the most powerful man on Earth is beyond me), but he's not a complete baffon, he just has beliefs which are flawed.
